COMMANDOS 1-0 IN 75TH SEASON
Friday, August 21, 2015

Hendersonville opened their 75th season of football with a 10 point victory in Memorial Stadium over the visiting McGavock Raiders.  The COMMANDOS played well throughout the first half, taking a 10-0 lead into the break.  The teams would battle in the 2nd half as McGavock would score on their first two drives tostay within one score for most of the game. HHS had an answer each time the Raiders would score, and the COMMANDOS were able to come out on top 24-14.

The COMMANDOS would kickoff to start the game, and the Black & Gold defense would be ready to play.  A tackle for loss by #61 Alex Tate on the second play of the drive would help lead to 3 & out on the game’s first drive.  Hendersonville’s first drive would start near midfield, and the COMMANDOS would look sharp picking up two first downs before the drive would be stopped with HHS in field goal range.  #38 Jacob Harris would be called on for the field goal attempt, and he would score the first points of the 2015 season for HHS as he connected on 43 yard fieldgoal.  McGavock would pick up one first down on the ensuing drive before HHS would force another punt.  HHS would return the punt after picking up one first down themselves.  #18 Austin White would down the punt on the 3 yard line putting McGavock on their own goaline to start this drive.  A 33 yardrun on the first play would give MHS some breathing room.  A big hit by #22 Caleb Thorton would force afumble on the final play of the 1st quarter, but the COMMANDOS were unable to recover the looseball allowing the Raiders to maintain possession.

McGavock would run two more plays before being forced topunt again.  #4 Mike Harris would have acouple of nice first down runs after the COMMANDOShad been backed up deep in their own territory. HHS would have their first turnover of the night on this possessionhowever as McGavock would force and recover a fumble inside HHS territory.  The defense would respond as #80 JacobBirdsong came up with a 4th down tackle that would give HHS the ballback without allowing the Raiders to score off the turnover.  Mike Harris would get the ball into Raiderterritory with a reception from #6 Brett Coker. A big run by #3 Anthony Hughes followed with runs by #10 Jack Towe and#20 Terrell Carter would get the ball inside the 5 yard line.  Mike Harris would score the first COMMANDO touchdown of the season with a4 yard run, and after Jacob Harris hit the PAT, HHS would have a 10-0advantage.  Hendersonville would forceanother 3 & out on the next McGavock series, and big punt return by Carterwould set HHS up just 35 yards from the endzone.  On the first play of this drive, Coker wouldconnect with #12 John Burton to set up a first and goal.  HHS could not get any closer, and would be forcedto attempt a 30 yard field goal.  Amishandled snap would lead to an interception on the field goal try.  McGavock would have time to run 4 playsbefore halftime with HHS up 10-0.

HHS would get the ball to begin the 2nd half andquickly go 3 & out.  After the punt,MHS would run 2 plays for minimal yardage, and on a 3rd and long, the Raiders would get their first score of the night as they would score with a77 yard touchdown pass.  A bad snap onthe PAT would leave the score at 10-6. The COMMANDOS would respond, marching the ball down the field with Towe and Carter carrying the ball beforeCarter would score with a 10 yard run. McGavock would get their best drive of the night on the next possessionas they would hold the ball for the rest of quarter running 11 plays as theymoved the ball inside the red zone as the quarter ended.

A 13 yard run on the first play of the 4thquarter with an added 2 point conversion would make the game a 3 point contestwith the score 17-14.  Hendersonvillewould again respond on offense having a TD drive of their own.  First down runs by Carter and Hughes wouldkeep this drive moving for HHS.  The COMMANDOS would eventually score as #15John Michael Oehlschlaeger would pass to Carter for a 7 yard TD for the finalscore of the night.  McGavock wouldreturn the kickoff past midfield, but after picking up one 1st down,a pass breakup by Birdsong on a screen pass attempt would help force theRaiders to punt.  Towe and Carter wouldhave good runs as HHS would be able to run out the clock to start their 75thseason 1-0.

Hendersonville (1-0) will travel next Friday to Murfreesborofor the first road game of the season as the COMMANDOS will take on the Siegel Stars (0-1).  The game will kickoff at 7:00.
