HHS WINS ON THE ROAD
Friday, August 28, 2015

The COMMANDOS went on the road and improved to 2-0 on the season as they traveled to Ken Nolan Stadium to take on the Siegel Stars.  Hendersonville would use a strong running attack led by senior running back #4 Mike Harris who had 219 yards and 2 scores to get a 20 point victory.

The game would not start the way the COMMANDOS had hoped as Siegel was able find the endzone with an 89 yard touchdown pass on the 2nd snap of the first series.  #43 Luke Carver would come through on the PAT to block the extra point putting HHS down by 6 points less than a minute into the game.  Hendersonville’s next mistake would come on the ensuing kickoff as they would field the ball and go out of bounds at the 1 yard line.  The COMMANDO offense would stay composed as they mounted a 99 yard scoring drive with runs by Harris and #20 Terrell Carter that would move the ball off the goaline before Harris would get a big run into Siegel territory.  #3 Anthony Hughes would have a nice run on the series as well before #10 Jack Towe scored with a tough 15 yard TD run to tie the game at 6.  #38 Jacob Harris would hit the PAT to give HHS a 1 point lead 7-6.  The teams would trade punts on the next two possession with each team going 3 & out.  #48 Thomas Roberts’s punt for HHS would pin the Stars inside their own 20.  Back to back passing first downs for SHS would get them into HHS territory before a couple of penalties would stall their drive forcing a punt.  The COMMANDOS would again go 3 & out near the end of the first quarter.

The Black & Gold defense would force another 3 & out as the Stars would be forced to punt to start the 2nd quarter.  HHS could not get a drive going again, being forced to punt after 3 offensive plays.  This Stars drive would start inside COMMANDO territory, and after a couple of first downs, HHS would stiffen up and hold Siegel to a 33 yard field goal that would make the score 7-9.  Following the field goal, the COMMANDOS would be able to get moving as #6 Brett Coker would connect with #84 Hayden Frentz for a first down to start the drive before Harris would break lose for his first score of the night on a 64 yard run giving HHS a lead which they would not give up.  Big defensive plays by #22 Caleb Thorton, #7 Weston Schwerdt, #80 Jacob Birdsong, and #75 Brandon Dove on the next Siegel possession would help HHS force them to punt after they had got the ball into COMMANDO territory.  Good runs by Schwerdt, Carter, and Harris would get Hendersonville moving the ball, but an incompletion on a 4th down try would end the drive with no points going on the board.  SHS would kneel on the ball to go into halftime with Hendersonville up 14-9.

HHS would get the ball to start the 2nd half, and after picking up one 1st down, they would call on Roberts to punt again.  The Black & Gold defense would start the 2nd half better than the 1st as they forced the Stars to a 3 & out on their first series.  After the punt, 1st down runs by Harris, Schwerdt, and #15 John Michael Oehlschlaeger would propel the COMMANDOS down the field and Harris would get his 2nd score, this one on a 12 yard run to make the score 21-9.  The Stars would look to answer as they would get a first down run to start their drive, but #23 Colby Pearl would force a fumble that Dove would recover to end Siegel drive.  Carter would rip off a big run on following the turnover to put HHS in the red zone, and Towe would score on a 10 yard run.  Siegel would move the ball down the field through the air on the next series eventually scoring with a 34 yard TD pass.  The 2 point try would be no good as #21 Frankie Small would knock down a pass attempt by the Stars.  After the kickoff, HHS would run one play before the 3rd quarter ended.

Hendersonville would only run 2 more plays before being forced to punt again.  The COMMANDOS would get a turnover on downs on the next SHS possession.  Small would score the final TD of the night on the next series with a 1 yard run that capped an 11 play 54 yard drive by HHS.  The score came with 3:12 left in the game extending the COMMANDOS lead to 35-15.  HHS would again force Siegel to turn the ball over on downs, and this time HHS would be able to run out the clock claiming their 2nd win of the season.

Hendersonville (2-0) will return to Memorial Stadium next Friday for their homecoming game.  The game will be the team’s first Region 6 contest as the COMMANDOS will face the Cane Ridge Ravens (2-0).  The game will kickoff at 7:00 with the homecoming ceremony beginning at 6:30.

The JV team plays again on Monday and they will travel to Gallatin with a start time of 6:00.  The Freshman team (1-1) went on the road Thursday and got their first win of the season.  They will also return home this week as they will host Siegel on Thursday starting at 6:30 at Memorial Stadium.
