COMMANDOS fall in 2nd Round
Friday, November 14, 2008

HHS’s season came to end Friday night at Memorial Stadium with a 14-48 loss to the Franklin Rebels.  Three consecutive touchdowns on three offensive snaps for the Rebels in the 2nd Quarter put the COMMANDOS in a 0-28 hole that they could not recover from.

On a rainy night, Franklin got the ball to start the game and got two first downs on their first two offensive snaps.  The Black and Gold defense then tightened down to force a punt after #55 Kaleb Davis would get a sack on 3rd and 7.  Hendersonville would go 3 and out on their first possession, punting the ball back to the Rebels.  The COMMANDOS would return the favor; this time helped by a tackle for loss by #47 Nick Yazzie.  HHS still couldn’t get anything going on offense as they would be forced to punt again after only three plays.  Franklin would convert two 3rd downs on their next possession on their way to an 8 play 67 yard scoring drive that would end with a 13 yard TD run to put the Rebels up by 7.

After the kickoff, the COMMANDOS would settle down and get a drive going, but a mishandled snap after two first downs, and a sack on 3rd down would stall the promising drive, and force the COMMANDOS to call on #35 Richie Reichenberger to punt for the third time in as many offensive possessions.  Franklin would get one first down after receiving the ball back, and then they would score on a 47 yard pass as the COMMANDO defensive backs would mess up on the coverage.  Now down 0-14, the COMMANDOS offense would go three and out again.  Franklin would get the ball at midfield and would take the ball the entire 50 yards on one play for their second rushing touchdown of the night.  Back to back penalties on 3rd down during the COMMANDOS next series would lead to another punt.  The Rebels would only need one play to score again this one would be a 54 yard TD run putting the COMMANDOS down 0-28.  HHS would finally get something going on their next offensive series as they would go down the field in 9 plays to get to the Rebel 32 yard line, and on 4th down the COMMANDOS decided to fake a fieldgoal and it paid off as #15 Brandon Hall would find #88 Chad Pennington for the 32 yard scoring pass play with just 14.5 seconds left in the half.  Franklin would take a knee, and the COMMANDOS would head to the locker room down 7-28.

The COMMANDOS got the ball to start the second half and would go 6 plays before throwing an interception.  The HHS defense would force Franklin to punt after 3 plays; however HHS could not get a first down, and on 4th down decided to fake a punt that they were unable to execute giving Franklin the ball back with good field position.  HHS would hold again forcing the Rebels to punt again after 3 plays helped by Yazzie forcing the quarterback to intentionally ground the football on 3rd down.  The COMMANDOS would then march the ball down the field with a 9 play drive to the 7 yardline.  It looked like the COMMANDOS were poised to cut the lead to 14-28 and have a chance to come back, but an interception on the last play of the 3rd Quarter would devastate the COMMANDOS.  The Rebels returned the interception 93 yards to the COMMANDO 7 yardline.

On the 1st play of the 4th Quarter, Franklin would execute the same play that HHS had just thrown the pick on for a 7 yard TD pass.  The deflated COMMANDOS would go 3 and out after the kickoff.  Franklin would then score in 2 plays on a 58 yard TD run to go up 7-42.  The COMMANDOS wouldn’t quit playing hard as they were able to score on their next possession as #34 Whit Gray would cap off a drive with a 12 yard TD run.  The Rebels didn’t quit playing hard either as they took their next possession 56 yards on 7 plays to score on a 1 yard TD run before missing the PAT.  HHS would turn the ball over on downs on their next possession allowing Franklin to take a knee and end the game with a score of 14-48.

The loss ends the COMMANDOS season with a final mark of 10-2 (with 2 games vacated to make the record 8-2), and Franklin will move on to the Quarter-Finals of the TSSAA 5A Playoffs.
