SEASON OVER

The COMMANDOS suffered a season ending 7-38 loss to top ranked Independence in the 2nd Round of the TSSAA class 5A playoffs at Eagle Stadium in Thompson’s Station.  After trailing 0-17 at halftime, HHS would force a turnover and cut the lead to 7-17, but the next two IHS possessions would result in touchdowns while the next two HHS possession would be 3 & outs.

Hendersonville would receive the football to begin the game.  The COMMANDOS could not connect with a streaking receiver on the opening play, but #20 Terrell Carter would have a physical run to convert a 3rd down.  After gaining the first down, the COMMANDOS would commit a penalty that would put them in a long yardage situation.  HHS would then be forced to punt.  The Eagles would drive the ball into HHS territory on their first possession as HHS could not come up with a fumble that #7 Weston Schwerdt forced.  #3 Anthony Hughes would get a sack setting up a 4th and 13 that IHS would go for.  The gamble would pay off for the Eagles as they would complete a 21 yard TD pass putting HHS in a 0-7 hole.  #4 Mike Harris would have a first down run to start the next COMMANDOS series, but then HHS would go 3 & out.  The Eagles again would be able to move the ball on the Black & Gold defense as this drive would eventually end with a 1 yard TD run.  Hendersonville would go three and out on their next possession.

Hendersonville’s punt to start the 2nd quarter would put the defense back on the field.  IHS would move the ball on another drive; this time helped out by an HHS penalty, but after getting a 1st & goal, the COMMANDOS would hold the Eagles to a 27 yard field goal which would be true making the score 0-17.  Hendersonville’s offense would get going as Carter would start the drive with a nice run.  Hughes would keep the drive going with a 1st down run, but the drive would end with a turnover as Hendersonville would throw an interception.  Backed up near their own goaline, the Eagles would use back to back runs to get some room to operate.  Independence would move the ball inside the HHS 20 yard line, but HHS would hold them to a 51 yard field goal attempt that would come up short on the final play of the 1st half.

Independence would receive the 2nd half kickoff, and the COMMANDO defense would come up big.  After a tackle for loss by #55 Emmitt Richardson on the 1st snap of the 2nd half, Schwerdt would force another fumble and #24 Reggie Harris would fall on this fumble to give HHS the ball inside Eagle territory.  A tough 1st down run by Carter started this drive, a pass interference penalty on 4th down would keep the drive going as Hendersonville would take advantage of the turnover.  The score would come with #6 Brett Coker connecting with Hughes for a 23 yard TD pass.  Down by 10, Hendersonville would need a stop, but Independence responded with a nice drive that ended in the endzone with a 21 yard TD pass.  Hendersonville would punt after three plays.

The next IHS drive would go into the 4th quarter, and after converting a 3rd and long, the Eagles would put the game out of reach with a 1 yard TD run.  The COMMANDOS would go three & out again on their next series.  Back to back tackles for loss by #10 Jack Towe would be for nothing on the following drive as the Eagles would put up the final points of the night with a 19 yard strike.  Schwerdt would run the ball for a couple of first downs as HHS got the ball back, but the clock would expire on this series ending Hendersonville’s season in the 2nd Round for the 2nd consecutive season.
