COMMANDOS STUMBLE IN OT
Friday, September 02, 2016

In their first overtime game since 2013, HHS would fall to Cane Ridge by 1 point in the Region opener.  The game between the COMMANDOS and the Ravens had 8 lead changes, and ended regulation knotted up at 40 points apiece.  Hendersonville would get the ball first in OT and #7 Weston Schwerdt would score with a 5 yard TD reception from quarterback #6 Brett Coker.  The Ravens would block the PAT leaving HHS up by 6.  It would only take CRHS 2 plays to find the endzone on their possession, and they would be true on their PAT getting the 1 point victory.

Cane Ridge would get the ball to start the game and after having a 1st down run, they would be forced to punt.  HHS would take the lead on the 3rd play of their 1st possession as #3 Anthony Hughes would get a 57 yard rushing touchdown.  After #38 Jacob Harris’s extra point, HHS had an early 7-0 advantage.  The Ravens would answer on their next offensive series with a couple of big pass plays setting up a 1st and goal at the 1 yard line where they would rush it in to tie the game at 7.  The teams would then trade punts before CRHS would get another drive going with a 1st down run followed by a 1st down pass.  They would eventually take the lead for the 1st time with a 7 yard TD pass.  A good return by #43 Luke Carver on the kickoff would let HHS start their next possession near midfield near the end of the 1st quarter.

A 3rd down reception by #32 Derek Kincaid would keep the COMMANDOS going on this drive before a big gain on a catch by Hughes would come back due to penalty.  Hendersonville would eventually turn the ball over on downs.  The Black & Gold defense would force a 3 & out on this possession.  On the 1st play of this possession, Carver would make a catch on the 1st play to set up a 1st & goal.  Schwerdt would score with a 7 yard run to tie the game at 14.  The Ravens would move the sticks with a pass before facing a 3rd and long.  #5 Xavier Fitts would come up with an interception, but HHS would be called for a penalty to allow the Ravens to continue their drive.  They would cover the remaining 31 yards with 2 runs.  This extra point would be no good making the score 20-14.  After the COMMANDOS punted, CRHS had a TD called back due to penalty.  A sack by #24 Reggie Harris and #51 Brandon Butler would help lead to a Raven punt.  Schwerdt would pick a 1st down run on this series, then after a catch by #81 Jordan Amis, Coker would connect with Hughes for a 40 yard TD.  Harris would give HHS the lead back with this PAT making it 21-20.  Late in the first half, the Ravens would be driving before #9 Clay Richard would end their hopes of regaining the lead before halftime with an interception allowing HHS to run the clock out and head to halftime up 21-20.

HHS would get the ball to begin the 2nd half, and runs by Hughes and Schwerdt would get things going with a catch by Kincaid.  However, this promising drive would end with a punt after the Ravens sacked Coker.  A big run on the 1st play of Cane Ridge’s first 2nd half possession would move the ball from their own 15 yard line to near midfield.  The COMMANDOS looked to have this drive stopped with a fumble forced by Fitts and recovered by Schwerdt, but it would be overturned, and the Ravens would eventually find the endzone with an 18 yard pass.  A 2 point try would fail making it 21-26.  The teams would again trade punts, and Schwerdt would give the COMMANDOS a first down as the 3rd quarter ended.

On the first play of the 4th quarter, the Ravens defense would score with an interception returned 50 yards to the endzone.  Hendersonville would respond with 18 unanswered points as Hughes would score one with a 32 yard pass from Coker, Carver would run for in from 16 yards out, and Hughes would score one more with a 30 yard rush making the score 40-33.  Cane Ridge would stayed poised trialing by 7, driving the ball 72 yards in 9 plays with a 4th down conversion to score with 28 seconds left in the game.  HHS would only run 1 play before time would run out with the teams tied at 40.

Hendersonville’s Schwerdt would score in overtime, but after the PAT got blocked, HHS would only be up 46-40.  Two plays into the Ravens overtime possession, they would score with a 4 yard run, hit the PAT and win the game 46-47.

Hendersonville (2-1) will be travel again next week as they will take on Beech (2-1).  The Buccaneers are also (2-1).  This will be the 35th meeting between the cross-town rivals, it will be at Shackle Island Stadium and kickoff is at 7:00.
