FIRST REGION 6 WIN
Friday, September 16, 2016

The COMMANDOS returned to Memorial Stadium after dropping two straight road games by one point, and were able to get a 14 point Region victory against the defending Region 6 Champion Hillsboro Burros.  Hendersonville used 7 turnovers including 3 interceptions (1 returned 25 yards for a defensive TD) by #7 Weston Schwerdt and nearing 300 rushing yards to get off to a 21-0 lead late in the 3rd quarter before going on to win 28-14 and improve their record to 3-2 on the season.

Hillsboro would get the ball to begin the game, and after completing a long pass on the 2nd snap, the Burros would be inside Hendersonville territory.  #55 Emmitt Richardson would pounce on the ball on a handoff fumble by Hillsboro to give HHS the ball.  Hendersonville’s offense would move the ball with a 1st down catch by #43 Luke Carver thrown from #6 Brett Coker and a run by Coker before #3 Anthony Hughes busted a 39 yard touchdown run.  #38 Jacob Harris would convert the PAT to put HHS on top 7-0.  On the ensuing possession, the Burros would pick up a first down by pass before Hughes would come up with a strip sack forcing a fumble that #51 Bandon Butler would fall on to give HHS their 2nd turnover of the night.  Starting just 26 yards from the endzone, Hendersonville would again take advantage of the turnover as Carver would score with a 26 yard run on the 2nd play of the drive.  #97 Ashton Dodd would add this extra point and the COMMANDOS would be up 14-0.  Looking to answer, Hillsboro would move the ball on their next drive through the air before Schwerdt would have his first interception of the night.  Hendersonville would again be able to move the ball with runs by Schwerdt, Hughes, and #24 Reggie Harris along with a catch by #2 Gabe Dalton as the 1st quarter came to a close with HHS driving the ball.

A run by Coker early in the 2nd quarter would set HHS up with a 1st & goal, however the COMMANDOS would turn the ball over on downs and come away with no points.  Hillsboro would look to grab the momentum after not allowing Hendersonville to score as they completed a pass and would run all the way to the goaline before fumbling.  A hustling Carver would be there to recover the loose ball for an HHS touchback keeping the score at 14-0 and giving Hendersonville the ball at the 20 yard line.  Hughes would pick a first down for the COMMANDOS with a run before HHS would punt.  A first down catch by Hillsboro would move the ball into Hendersonville territory, then the COMMANDO defense would force a turnover on downs after #25 Eric Tilson applied pressure forcing an incomplete pass on 4th down.  Hendersonville would go 3 & out on this possession.  The Burros would again pick a first down by pass, but Carver would end this possession with an interception.  HHS would get one first down on this drive with a scramble by Coker and then run two more plays before the teams broke for halftime with the COMMANDOS up 14-0.

Hendersonville would get the ball to start the 2nd half.  Coker would pick up a first down with a run, and then facing a 4th and short, the COMMANDOS would draw the Burros offside to keep the drive going.  Kincaid would convert a 3rd down with a run, but HHS would get sacked on their next 3rd down which led to a punt.  #9 Clay Richard would down the punt by #35 Jonathan Lisbona at the 1 yard line.  The Burros would convert a 4th down of their own with a run before Richardson would get a tackle for loss followed by another tackle for loss by #22 Caleb Thorton & #5 Xavier Fitts.  Facing a 3rd & long, Schwerdt would get his 2nd pick, and this one he would return 25 yards to the endzone to make the score 21-0.  Hillsboro would answer this score with a 59 yard TD pass on the first play of their next possession cutting the lead back to 14 points.  Hughes and Harris would have nice runs as the 3rd quarter ticked down.

Hughes would start the 4th quarter with a first down run, and then Coker would connect with Dalton for a 29 yard TD pass to make the score 28-7.  The Burros would gain a first down with a good run before #62 Bryan Strahm would get a tackle for loss.  Schwerdt would end the drive with his 3rd interception of the night.  Hendersonville would go 3 & out on their next series after a 1st down run by Carver was called back due to penalty.  Down by 21 points, Hillsboro would move the ball down the field and eventually score with a 1 yard TD pass.  #16 Justin Ernst would recover a Burro onside kick try, and after 1st down runs by Kincaid and Carver, the COMMANDOS would be able to kneel on the ball to run the clock out getting the 28-14 victory.

Hendersonville (3-2) will be back at Memorial Stadium next week for their homecoming game.  This year’s opponent will be the East Nashville Eagles (2-3).  Kickoff for the game next Friday night will be at 7:00 with homecoming ceremony starting at 6:30.
