REGION CHAMPIONS
Thursday, October 30, 2008

HHS won their 4th Region Championship and their 6th Championship all time with a win at the defending Region 5 Champion Hunters Lane’s Warrior Stadium.  COMMANDOS never trail after scoring a TD on their first offensive possession to get the victory 17-6.  The win makes the COMMANDOS undefeated in Region 5 games, and gives HHS the number 1 seed from Region 5 going into the TSSAA 5A playoffs.  They will take on the Ravenwood Raptors next Friday at Memorial Stadium.  The Raptors are the 4th seed from Region 6.  Other teams making the playoffs from Region 5 are 2nd place-Gallatin, 3rd place-Hunters Lane, and 4th place-Antioch.  Each will have a first round match up with a Region 6 team next week.

The Warriors got the ball to start the game Friday night, and took the 1st play around the right end for 11 yards and 1st down.  That would be their longest running play of the night, and the COMMANDO defense would force a punt after 3 more plays.  On HHS’s first drive, #25 CJ Murrell would get 2 big runs as the COMMANDOS would drive the football 68 yards with 4 1st downs for a score.  #15 Brandon Hall would sneak in for the 1 yard TD run to put HHS up 7-0 early in the game.  The COMMANDO defense would come up big with a 3 and out on HLHS’s next possession helped by #44 Andrew Hight’s 11 yard loss on a QB sack, and a great open field tackle by #26 Zack Hill.

HHS’s next drive would go into the 2nd Quarter as it would go 11 plays and add 3 more 1st downs (one on a pass interference call), before the COMMANDOS would have to settle for a 42 yard fieldgoal attempt that was missed keeping the score at 7-0.  Hunters Lane would face a 4th and 1 on their next possession, and they decided to go for the 1st down, but #55 Kaleb Davis and #54 DJ Cull would be there to make sure that the Warriors would not gain the 1st down giving HHS the ball back around midfield.  On this possession, #80 Troy Dye would get his first career catch, and #3 Spencer Armstrong would come up with a huge run on 4th and 8 before the COMMANDOS would attempt another fieldgoal, this one from 33 yards out.  #35 Richie Reichenberger would knock this one through to give HHS a 10-0 lead.  The COMMANDOS would pin the Warriors inside their own 1 yardline on the ensuing kickoff, and HLHS would only have time for 1 play before the teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.

On the second half kickoff, #47 Nick Yazzie would return the ball to the Hunters Lane 46 yard line, but the Warriors defense would force the COMMANDOS to go 3 and out.  The Warriors would fumble the Reichenberger punt and #50 Austin Clem would come up the ball giving HHS the ball at the Hunters Lane 31 yardline.  HHS would take advantage of this field position, and go the entire 31 yards to the endzone.  The scoring drive would take 8 plays and be capped off with a 3 yard TD pass from Hall to Murrell putting HHS up 17-0.

The Warriors next drive would go into the 4th Quarter and into the endzone as it would be an 18 play 79 yard drive with 6 1st downs.  The COMMANDOS would pass interfere to give the Warriors 2 of those first downs before a 4 yard TD run, however Yazzie would block the PAT to keep the score 17-6.  Yazzie would get another big kickoff return, this one to the Warrior 48 yardline, and HHS would get 1 1st down before punting the ball back to the Warriors.  #59 Roma Shutt would get the 1st hit on the HLHS QB for a COMMANDO sack on the next Warrior possession, and then Dye and Shutt would break up a screen pass on 4th down forcing the Warriors to turn the ball over on downs.  HHS would be unable to run out the clock on offense, but they did get the ball in scoring position helped with a fumble recovered by Murrell for a 1st down.  The COMMANDOS would miss their 2nd fieldgoal of the night however giving Hunters Lane another chance, but they would have just 1:19 left on the clock.  A sack would end the game as everyone on the defense front (#58 Kevin Stephens, Shutt, #57 Joe Townsend, #88 Chad Pennington, and Dye) was in on bringing down the Warrior QB.  After the horn sounded for the end of the game, the COMMANDOS could celebrate their 1st Region Championship since 2001.

The COMMANDOS will host Ravenwood next Friday night at Memorial Stadium.  Kickoff for the COMMANDOS versus Raptors 1st Round Play-off game is scheduled for 7:00.
