RUSSELL BLOCKS PAT TO END GAME IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
Thursday, August 27, 2009

Junior defensive lineman #69 Cayman Russell blocked Riverdale’s PAT in the second overtime to end the game with the COMMANDOS winning 28-27.  The Thursday night game between the Hendersonville COMMANDOS and the visiting Riverdale Warriors was tied 14-14 after 4 quarters of play.  It then took 2 overtime periods to decide the winner at Memorial Stadium in one of the most exciting games in HHS history.  HHS pulled out the victory with a blocked extra point to give them their first win of 2009, and the first overtime win for the COMMANDOS since beating Gallatin 20-17 in overtime in 1998.  HHS had lost their previous 5 overtime games.

The game started with a good kick-off return by the Warriors, but after a fumbled snap on the first play from scrimmage, the COMMANDO defense would force a punt after 3 plays including a pass break-up by senior cornerback #14 Jeremiah Lambert.  HHS would get one first down on their first possession before having to settle for a 53 yard field goal attempt which would be no good.  Riverdale was able to get their first 1st down on their next possession on a pass interference call on third down.  However, the Black & Gold defense would not allow much more, forcing Riverdale to punt again.  HHS would get the ball back, but on the second play of the series, the COMMANDOS would make the first mistake of the night as Junior quarterback #12 Elijah Howell would try to hit Sophomore tight end #32 Shawn Harris, but the Warriors would come up with an interception.

Riverdale would capitalize off of the turnover by scoring the first points of the night on a 3rd down and 1, the Warrior quarterback #15 would run off left tackle 43 yards for a TD, putting Riverdale up 0-7.  The COMMANDOS would respond quickly, as they drove the ball 76 yards for the game tying touchdown.  The TD would come on 4th down and inches; senior running back #17 Jonathan Snavely would take the ball 40 yards for HHS’s first score of the 2009 season.  The COMMANDO defense would force another 3 and out, and after a 13 yard punt return by Junior #4 Nigel Jones, HHS would have the ball at the Warrior 37 yard line.  HHS would be unable to add any points to the board before halftime as they missed a 44 yard field goal.  Senior defensive end #82 James Gillen would force a fumble that Howell would recover, this would give HHS one more chance to get on the board, but this time they would miss a 47 yard field goal, making the score at halftime 7 all.

The third quarter was won by the Warriors, after forcing a COMMANDO punt, Riverdale went 78 yards in 9 plays capped off by a 1 yard TD run by #29.  On the ensuing possession, Howell would throw his second pick of the night giving the Warriors the ball on the HHS 32 yard line with the score 7-14 in favor of Riverdale.  The defense would respond, and Lambert would have a tackle for a loss of 5 yards on 3rd down forcing the Warriors into a punt.  HHS looked to have something going on their next possession as they had 2 first downs in as many plays, but then HHS had 2 offside penalties and gave up a sack forcing them to punt.

When Riverdale got the ball back, they looked to cushion their lead, but a 4th down stop by senior defensive end #24 Brett Jaeckel gave HHS the ball back with the chance to tie.  However the teams would trade punts before HHS went on a 13 play 72 yard drive to tie the score as Howell would throw his first career touchdown pass to fellow Junior #80 Troy Dye with less than a minute left in the game.  Riverdale was content with going into overtime as they let the clock run out after the kick-off.

In the overtime period, Riverdale wasted no time getting on the board as they would score in 1 play to go up 14-21.  HHS would lose yards on first down, and then throw an incompletion on second.  Howell would find Senior #9 Austin Harris on third down to get the ball back to the 9 yard line, and on fourth down, Nigel Jones would make a great catch on a ball thrown by Howell for the touchdown.  #35 Richie Reichenberger would come out to tie the game at 21.  HHS would get the ball first in the second overtime, and after Howell would scramble to the 1 yard line, junior #33 Chris Moore would get two runs to score, and on 4th down would get the ball in the endzone.  After the Reichenberger PAT HHS would have their first lead of the night 28-21.  Riverdale’s QB would go into the endzone untouched on the Warriors first play, and that’s when Russell was able to get his hand up and block the extra point making it fall short and no good giving HHS the victory 28-27.
