COMMANDOS WIN FIRST DISTRICT 9-AAA GAME
Friday, September 04, 2009

Hendersonville scores touchdowns of their first 5 possessions of the game leading to a 41-20 victory over District 9 foe Lebanon.  The COMMANDOS came ready to play, and that helped them get out to an early lead; despite some shaky play on defense, and over 175 yards in penalties, they were able to hold off the Blue Devils.

Kicker Richie Reichenberger started the game with a kickoff that sailed into the endzone for a touchback so the Black & Gold defense took the field and started great forcing a 3 and out by Lebanon.  #4 Nigel Jones would have his 40 yard punt returned nullified by a penalty, however, senior running back #24 Brett Jaeckel would rush for 43 yards on the first offensive play of the game, and later in the drive on a 3rd and short situation, #33 Chris Moore would carry the ball 13 yards in for the first score of the night.  The COMMANDO defense would step up and force another 3 and out on the following possession.  This would lead to a TD by Sophomore #3 LaDontez Bryant from the 3 yard line.  The scoring drive was helped out by a 35 yard catch and run by Sophomore tight end #32 Shawn Harris from fellow Sophomore quarterback #8 Hunter Brown.  Lebanon would answer with a 65 yard scoring drive of their own capped by a 14 yard TD pass cutting the lead in half to 7-14.  After the score the Blue Devils would unsuccessfully try an onside kick, giving HHS the ball with great field position.  Moore would get his 2nd score of the 1st quarter, this one from 32 yards out making the score 7-21.

The defense would get back to playing well on Lebanon’s next possession as #2 Taylor Bozeman would get a sack, and on 3rd down #34 Whit Gray would get a sack forcing a punting situation.  The Blue Devils would attempt their second trick of the night by faking the punt, but Bryant would come up and break-up the pass giving the COMMANDOS the ball back again with a short field.  #9 Austin Harris would make the Blue Devils pay for the mistake, taking the ball into the endzone from 29 yards out.  The Blue Devils would get a drive going on their next possession, however after driving to the COMMANDO 29 yard line, #42 Maverick Flowers would force a fumble that would go into the endzone, and Gray would come up with the turnover.  HHS would get a penalty on 1st down putting the COMMANDOS in a 1st and 20 situation from their own 10 yard line.  Brown would find Jones for a 90 yard passing touchdown, however the PAT would get blocked making the score 34-7.  On Lebanon’s next offensive series, #14 Jeremiah Lambert would get an interception at the Lebanon 24 yard line, but the COMMANDOS drive would go backwards and they would miss a 48 yard field goal attempt.  Gray and #57 Joe Townsend would get back to back sacks ending any chances for another Blue Devil score before the halftime.

Lebanon would try another onside attempt after the half, and were able to recover this one setting up their second score of the night on a 10 yard pass, but they would miss the extra point.  The offense would pick up where they left off going 91 yards with 3 first downs helped by a 42 yard catch by Jones, and eventually Brown would sneak in from the 1 yard line for the COMMANDOS final score of the night.  Jones would get an interception on Lebanon’s ensuing possession, but HHS could not capitalize.  Lebanon was able to score one more TD late in the 4th quarter, making the final score 41-20.

The COMMANDOS will play at LaVergne next Friday night for a non-district game.  This will be LaVergne’s homecoming game, and we would like everyone to come show their COMMANDO PRIDE for the game.  Kickoff for the COMMANDOS versus Wolverines game is scheduled for 7:00.
