Wolverines humble COMMANDOS 15-26
Friday, September 11, 2009

The LaVergne Wolverines handed the COMMANDOS their first loss at “The Den” for LaVergne’s homecoming game.  HHS was dominated in the first half as they were only able to get 1 first down on 14 plays while the Wolverines held the ball for 38 plays and had 12 first downs.  HHS was down 7-16 at halftime, and were unable to recover in the second half with too many mistakes.  The COMMANDOS had over 30 missed tackles and 3 turnovers in the loss.

LaVergne got the ball to start the game, and they were able to get the ball inside the COMMANDO 15 yard line on a wide receiver screen before a holding penalty would take them out of field goal range; #5 Patrick Cash would come with an interception at the 9 yard line and run it out to the 24 to give HHS their first possession of the night.  The COMMANDOS would take advantage of the turnover as #3 LaDontez Bryant would take the second offensive play 76 yards for a COMMANDO TD.  Richie Reichenberger would add the extra point to put HHS up 7-0 early in the contest.  The Black & Gold defense would bend on the Wolverines next possession, but again would not break; they would push LaVergne backward after letting them get deep into HHS territory forcing a punt.  Returner Nigel Jones would muff the punt giving LaVergne the ball for 1st and goal on the 10 yard line.  The defense would hold helped by a Whit Gray sack of the LaVergne quarterback forcing a 32 yard field goal off the COMMANDO turnover.  The Wolverines would connect on the attempt to make the score 7-3.  The offense went 3 and out the next time HHS had the ball.

LaVergne’s possession after the punt would go into the 2nd quarter, and on the first play of the quarter the Wolverines would get their first touchdown of the night on a 47 yard run making the score 7-9 as they were unable to convert on the PAT.  HHS then threw 2 incompletions, and had a busted play on 3rd down forcing them to punt inside their own 20.  LaVergne would score on their third straight possession, this one on a 9 yard TD pass; the point after was good giving the Wolverines a 9 point lead 7-16.  HHS was able to get their only first down of the half on their next possession, but that was all as the Wolverine defense forced another punt.  LaVergne would drive down inside COMMANDO territory again only to miss a field goal with 10 seconds left in the half.  The COMMANDOS would take a knee to go into halftime down 7-16.

HHS got the ball to start the second half, and finally got moving on offense, after 2 first downs, HHS would give up a sack for a loss of 15 yards, and then get a delay of game penalty forcing a 3rd down and 24, and then a punt.  The Black and Gold defense also came out of halftime ready to play as they forced a 3 and out, but the COMMANDOS could not field the punt and gave up over 20 yards of field position as the Wolverines got a favorable bounce.  HHS would be held to a 3rd and 9, and quarterback Elijah Howell would elude a defender to find Nigel Jones for a 35 yard gain getting the ball inside the 15 yard line.  HHS would have more mistakes with back to back fumbles, the second one being picked up by LaVergne and returned 88 yards for a touchdown putting HHS down 7-23.  HHS got the ball back, and continued to move the ball.  After 1 first down, Bryant would score his second TD of the night, this one on a 45 yard run.  Austin Harris would catch a 2 point conversion to make the score 15-23.  The Wolverines would return the kickoff to near midfield.

With the field position, LaVergne was able to pick up 3 first downs and connect on a 22 yard field goal making it a 2 possession game.  The COMMANDOS did not field the ensuing kickoff clean forcing the drive to start at their own 8 yard line.  However, they were able to drive down to the Wolverine 20 before dropping a pass on 4th down.  The defense would do its job forcing a 3 and out, and giving the COMMANDOS one more chance.  HHS looked to have a chance to score before throwing an interception giving LaVergne the opportunity to run the clock out; beating the COMMANDOS 15-26.

The COMMANDOS will return home next week to take District opponent Mt. Juliet.  Mt. Juliet is leading District 9, and is the only team unbeaten this year.  Kickoff for the COMMANDOS versus the Golden Bears game is scheduled for 7:00 at Memorial Stadium.
