COMMANDOS RECORD 2ND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT
Friday, October 09, 2009

HHS was able to get their second straight shutout Friday night as they defeated county rival Station Camp 40-0 at Memorial Stadium.  It was a special night for the COMMANDOS as they honored the 1941 team which was the first ever for Hendersonville High School.  Members of that team came back, and were the honorary captains for the game.  The Black & Gold defense was able to limit the Bison to just 22 total yards on the night and 4 first downs in the shutout.  HHS was also able to score points on offense, defense, and special teams.  On defense, #24 Brett Jaeckel recovered a bad snap in the endzone for a score and the team got a safety after another bad snap; on offense Chris Moore and LaDontez Bryant rushed for scores while Troy Dye received one; Nigel Jones scored on a punt return, and Reichenberger added a field goal in the special teams.  The win improves the COMMANDOS record to 5-2 on the season, and 3-1 in District 9-AAA play.

HHS kicked off to start the game, and the defense started strong forcing a three and out helped by Joe Townsend as he forced a fumble, had a tackle for loss, and hurried the quarterback on 3rd down to force an incompletion.  After Jones fielded the punt, the offense had the ball at the Bison 45 yard line.  The COMMANDOS would look strong picking up 2 first downs before Moore would go in for the score from 19 yards out.  After the Reichenberger PAT, the COMMANDOS would lead 7-0.  The COMMANDOS would force another 3 and out helped by a third down sack by Cayman Russell and Townsend.  This time HHS would start the drive at the Bison 35 yard line.  Station Camp would stop the COMMANDOS, but a penalty on the punt would give HHS the ball in field goal range, and Reichenberger would come through with a 42 yard field goal to make the score 10-0.  The Bison would be forced to punt again after 3 plays, but on HHS’s possession, they would fumble the ball back to SCHS after rushing close to the first down marker.  Station Camp would get their first 1st down of the night on the first play after the turnover; however, Brandon Glenn would recover a Bison fumble giving HHS the ball back around midfield just before the end of the 1st quarter.

The COMMANDOS could not capitalize off the turnover as they would fail to convert on a 4th and 1.  The Bison would go nowhere as Jeremiah Lambert and James Gillen would combine for a tackle for loss on 2nd and 10, and the defense would hold on 3rd and long forcing a punt.  HHS would return the punt after only 3 offensive plays.  With the COMMANDOS controlling the field position, the defense forced the Bison to a 3rd and long deep inside their own territory; Station Camp would have a bad snap, and Jaeckel was able to fall on the ball for the touchdown giving HHS a 17-0 lead.  The Bison looked to have something going on their next possession after an HHS penalty on a SCHS punt kept the drive going, but 2 plays later Elijah Howell would intercept a pass.  The COMMANDOS would fail to score off the turnover, but Reichenberger’s punt would keep the Bison in bad field position.  On SCHS’s first play, they would have another bad snap, this one would go out of the back of the endzone for a safety making the score 19-0.  The COMMANDOS would get the ball back after the free kick, but would fumble only 17 yards away from the endzone ending any scoring chance.  Station Camp would take a knee to run out the clock on the first half.

Hendersonville would get the ball to start the second half, but would only get one first down (by a SCHS penalty) and then go 3 and out.  Townsend would have anther tackle for loss on the Bison first play of the half, the defense would then force a 3 and out.  Howell would have a big run on the next COMMANDO drive which would go 54 yards capped off by a 12 yard TD pass from Howell to Troy Dye.  The defense would force the Bison 3 and out again this one helped by a tackle for loss by Lambert.  Jones would come up with the special teams TD on this 52 yard punt return making the score 33-0.  Station Camp would have a big kickoff return after TD, and then get their longest run of the night a 37 yarder to the COMMANDO 8 yard line.

The 4th quarter started with SCHS in the red zone, but Jaeckel would force a fumble on 2nd down, Dye and Lambert would get the stop on 3rd down, and then Patrick Cash would keep the Bison off the score board as he broke up the 4th down pass.  Off the stop, Bryant would get his first carry of the night outrunning everybody to the endzone going 92 yards for the final score of the night.  This time Trenton Elsten would add the PAT making the score 40-0.  Station Camp would go 3 and out.  The COMMANDOS would fumble the ball back to the Bison only 23 yards away from the endzone, but 4 plays later, the COMMANDOS defense held the Bison out of the endzone again keeping the shutout.  Hendersonville would take a knee to run out the clock.

The COMMANDOS will be on the road next Friday to take on another county team in the Portland Panthers.  The game is October 17 and kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.
