COMMANDOS ROLL AT PORTLAND
Friday, October 16, 2009

Behind two 100 yard rushers, and #35 Richie Reichenberger's 3 field goals, the COMMANDOS get their 6 win of the 2009 season.  #9 Austin Harris and #3 LaDontez Bryant both eclipse the 100 yard mark against Portland as Harris had 122 yards and Bryant accounted for 104 leading to the 30-13 victory.  HHS is now 6-2 on the year and 4-1 in District 9-AAA games.

The night started good for the COMMANDOS as they were able to take the ball off the opening kickoff and drive 70 yards on 9 plays in 4 minutes and 11 seconds for a touchdown.  #33 Chris Moore capped the drive off with a 3 yard run into the endzone, and with Reichenberger’s PAT the COMMANDOS had an early 7-0 lead.  Reichenberger would then boot the kickoff into the endzone for his first of 7 touchbacks in the game (he was 7 for 7 on touchbacks).  The Black & Gold defense also started well forcing a 3 and out.  HHS would get the ball back with good field position.  Their drive would be 10 plays, but would only net 15 yards setting up a COMMANDO punt.

The defense would give up a first down on the next Panther possession, but #40 Chauncey Thomas and #80 Troy Dye would combine for a tackle for loss, and #42 Maverick Flowers would get a stop on third down to make Portland punt the ball back to the COMMANDOS.  HHS would return the punt after 3 offensive plays.  Reichenberger would punt the ball inside the Panther 20 yard line setting up Hendersonville’s next score.  This one would be scored by the defense as #69 Cayman Russell would scoop up a fumble and go in for a TD putting HHS up 14-0.  Thomas would break up a pass on third down after the Panthers had gained one first down to force them into another punting situation.  HHS got the ball back, and Harris would rip off a couple of long runs putting HHS inside the 10 yard line; the COMMANDOS would have to settle for a field goal attempt.  Reichenberger would drill the 25 yarder making the score 17-0.  Portland would be forced to punt after 6 plays, this time #25 James Gillen would break up a 3rd down pass attempt.  With time running out in the half, Harris would get a 41 yard run down to the 14 yard line setting up the COMMANDOS final score of the half which was a 32 yard Reichenberger field goal with 4 seconds left in the half.  Portland would run 1 play before the buzzer would sound, and HHS would head to the locker room up 20-0.

Portland got the ball to start the second half, and would be driving before #67 Taylor Hooks would force a fumble that #24 Brett Jaeckel would fall on.  HHS would capitalize off the turnover with Reichenberger’s 3rd field goal of the night; this one a 43 yarder.  The COMMANDO defensive unit would force a 3 and out, but HHS would be forced to do the same.  The Panthers would then drive, but on 4th down #57 Joe Townsend would rush a pass, and #14 Jeremiah Lambert would get the stop short of the first down marker.  HHS would get the ball back at their own 40 yard line, and Bryant would go 60 yards on the first play for the score putting HHS up 30-0.

Portland would drive the ball 10 plays on their next possession before turning the ball over on down.  HHS would then get 1 first down before turning the ball over on downs themselves.  The Panthers would then go on an 11 play drive ending with a 9 yard TD pass making the COMMNADO lead 23 points late in the 4th Quarter.  Portland would attempt and onside kick, but Russell was there to fall on it for the COMMANDOS.  HHS would take the ball all the way inside the 10 yard line, but would turn the ball over on downs with less than 1 minute left in the game.  #62 Austin Reaves would get a sack on the Portland quarterback, but on the last play of the game, the Panthers would score on a 34 yard pass.  The PAT was not attempted because it would not have changed the outcome of the game, and there was no time left on the clock making the final score 30-13.

The COMMANDOS will hit the road again next Friday as they travel across town to battle with the rival Beech Buccaneers.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.
