COMMANDOS FALL SHORT AT RIVERDALE
Friday, August 27, 2010

The COMMANDOS start the season 0-1 as the Warriors where able to beat HHS 14-22 in their season opener.  After planting the spear at midfield of Tomahawk stadium, the Warriors controlled the COMMANDOS for most of the night, as HHS was unable to get anything going offensively until late in the third quarter when they were down 0-14.  HHS did fight until the end and needed just one more possession to have a chance to tie, but the Warriors proved to be too strong for HHS.

The defense came out swarming and quickly forced a three and out after HHS had pinned Riverdale on their own 14 yard line on the opening kickoff.  Following the Warriors punt, HHS had the ball at the 48 yard line.  Riverdale’s stout defense would return the favor as HHS could not pick up a first down either, and punted the ball back to Riverdale.  Kicker #38 Shawn Bowerman would help HHS hold the field advantage as Riverdale had to start their next drive from their own 3.  The Warriors would start to take control of the line of scrimmage on the possession holding the ball for 14 plays and moving the ball to the HHS 21 yard line.  The COMMANDO defense would force a turnover on downs keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard, and the drive was helped by two 15 yard penalties called on Hendersonville.  HHS would get their first 1st down of the night on the ensuing possession as #7 Conner Kant would grab a pass from quarterback #12 Elijah Howell; however, after the three more plays, the COMMANDOS would be forced to punt again.

As the next Riverdale drive would go into the second quarter, they were able to get a first down of their own before being forced to punt and Hendersonville’s possession would be identical.  #34 Whit Gray was able to get a sack on the next series helping force the Warriors to punt from around midfield.  #2 Taylor Bozeman would give the COMMANDOS a great opportunity to take control of the game as he would block this kick and Howell would recover giving the COMMANDOS all the momentum, and the ball around midfield.  HHS was unable to capitalize however giving the ball back to Riverdale on a 3rd down interception which they would return to the HHS 44 yard line.  RHS did take advantage of their good fortune, on the next play their quarterback would run all 44 yards for the games first score.  Both teams would go three and out before HHS ran the clock out of the first half down 0-7.

Getting the ball to start the second half, HHS was hoping to tie the game, however the Warrior defense allowed very few yards, and the drive ended with the COMMANDOS punting the football again.  Riverdale would take the ball 85 yards on just 6 plays on their first possession of the second half capped off by a 1 yard TD run making the score 0-14.  HHS had no answer, and was forced to punt on the ensuing possession.  The defense took the field again, and after a sack on second down by #67 Taylor Hooks, #33 Chris Moore would recover a Warrior fumble.  On the next play Howell would run 61 yards for the teams first TD in 2010, and get the COMMANDOS on the board.  With Bowerman's PAT, the lead was cut in half.  The Warriors did not let HHS keep the momentum as they would answer again, this time a 73 yard TD run on the first play of their drive.  The PAT was missed, however, the COMMANDOS were called for roughing the kicker, and Riverdale would convert on a 2 pt conversion making the score 7-22.

Hendersonville would not get anything going on the next possession as they were forced to punt, and RHS would do the same with their first possession of the 4th quarter.  HHS would finally put together a drive as they went 71 yards on 11 plays to get their second score of the game.  This drive was helped by a 4th down conversion by Gray on a pass from Howell.  Moore would score the 1 yard TD on a run.  After the kickoff, the Warriors were able to run the last 3:47 off the clock with 3 first downs, 1 of them by penalty, to claim the victory.

Hendersonville (0-1) will have their first home game next Friday September 3rd as they will host the Lebanon Blue Devils (1-1).  Game time is set for 7:00.

The JV team will travel to Beech on Monday with a start time of 5:30, and the Freshman team will go to Lebanon with a kickoff at 6:30.
