COMMANDOS SURVIVE HOMECOMING
Friday, September 10, 2010

#33 Chris Moore and #5 Jarrell Adams score 2 TD’s each to lead COMMANDOS to second win.  #2 Taylor Bozeman blocks punt to help as HHS was able to hold off LaVergne and win their 2010 Homecoming game 28-21.  After breaking out to a 21-0 lead, the COMMANDOS hold off a Wolverine second half charge to survive Homecoming.

For the third week in a row, the COMMANDOS kicked off to start the game, and after 1 first down, they forced a punt attempt.  LaVergne’s punt would be the first big play of the game as Bozeman would block the kick, and recover it himself to set up the Black & Gold offense with the ball at the plus 17 yardline.  4 plays later Moore would rumble into the endzone to give the COMMANDOS an early 7-0 lead after #38 Shawn Bowerman added the extra point.  The Wolverines would get a drive going on the next possession before #40 Chauncey Thomas would deflect a pass that #45 Austin Lamb would intercept ending LaVergne’s scoring chances.  HHS would go on a 62 yard scoring march that ended with a 28 yard TD pass from #12 Elijah Howell to Adams.  Up 14-0, the defense forced a 3 and out.  The Wolverine punter would get off a spectacular 62 yard punt to give HHS the ball with their worst field position of the night at their own 25.

The COMMANDO offense was efficient going the 75 yards with big runs by #20 David Priddy before Moore would score his second TD of the night, this one a 3 yard run, and HHS was up 21-0 early in the second quarter.  The defense would do its job again forcing another punt after 3 Wolverine plays.  HHS would have the ball in plus territory again, but after getting sacked on first down, they would go backwards in 3 plays before being forced to punt for the first time.  LHS would get the ball at their own 24, and #34 Whit Gray would force a fumble on the first play of the drive, but the Wolverines were able to recover.  13 plays and 76 yards later LaVergne would score their first points of the night on a 3 yard TD run.  The COMMANDOS were unable to answer the score, and after 5 plays they were forced to punt again, but LaVergne would get called for too many men on the field giving the ball back to HHS.  Hendersonville would run 8 more plays before the half, and get the ball to the 13 yardline before time ran out with the COMMANDOS unable to put any more points on the board, and the teams went to the locker room with HHS leading 21-7.

#23 Ryan Rogers would get a good return on the second half kickoff, but the offense sputtered, and punted after just 3 plays.  On the LaVergne possession, Gray would get a sack on 1st down and then #7 Conner Kant and Howell would break up passes forcing LaVergne to punt from their own endzone.  The Wolverines would get a break on a shanked punt as it hit an HHS player, and LHS was able to land on it giving their drive new life.  After 2 first downs, HHS would force them to punt again.  Hendersonville would go three and out, followed by a TD drive by LaVergne that ended with a 10 yard pass to cut the lead to 21-14.  HHS would punt on their next possession as well.

Bowerman would pin LaVergne inside their own 10, and the defense would get off the field in 3 plays.  #4 Nigel Jones would set up the COMMANDOS on the plus 33 yardline after his 15 yard punt return.  3 plays later Adams would get his second TD of the night, this one a 32 yard run.  On the ensuing possession, the COMMANDOS would get a sack on 1st down by #63 Brady Kelly and #8 Hunter Brown, and Bozeman would get a sack of his own on 2nd down.  After a 3rd down incompletion LHS would punt.  Leading 28-14, HHS could not get anything going, and punted back to LHS.  The Wolverines would get 2 completions in 3 plays, the second being a 69 yard TD pass to make it a one possession game.  Adams would come up big as HHS got the ball back with a 35 yard run on the first play, after 2 more first downs time ran out on LaVergne’s comeback attempt, and the COMMANDOS won 28-21.

Hendersonville (2-1) will be on the road next week and back in District 9-AAA play as they travel to Mt. Juliet (2-1) to take on the Golden Bears.  Kickoff will be at 7:00.

The JV team will face Gallatin at 5:30 on Monday at Memorial Stadium, and the freshman team will play Mt. Juliet at Memorial Stadium on Thursday with a start time of 6:30.
