COMMANDOS CAN’T OVERCOME TERRIBLE 1ST QUARTER
Friday, September 17, 2010

The COMMANDOS got whipped by Mt. Juliet 6-23 in their 2nd District 9-AAA game of the 2010 season dropping their record to 2-2 and 1-1 in District play.  HHS gave up 199 yards and 16 points in the 1st Quarter, and went backward on offense with zero 1st downs and negative 30 yards during the 1st Quarter.  Mt. Juliet had 4 offense possessions in the first half, and they were able to score on all 4 of them giving them a 6-23 lead at halftime.  There would be no scoring in the 2nd half by either team.

HHS went on defense first, and the Golden Bears would waste no time showing they were the more prepared team going 58 yards on the first play from scrimmage.  #12 Elijah Howell would make a TD saving tackle on that first play, and the defense would stone up forcing the Golden Bears to settle for a 25 yard fieldgoal.  On the ensuing kickoff, #4 Nigel Jones would bust a 43 yard return to set the COMMANDOS around midfield for their first offensive possession of the night.  The offense would lose 2 yards on 3 plays before punting the ball.  Mt. Juliet would muff the punt, but quickly fall on it, and on the 4th play of their drive they would get their second big play of the night with a 70 yard TD run.  After the PAT, the COMMANDOS were down 0-10.  The COMMANDOS next drive would start at their own 38 yardline, after losing 28 yards with a sack, penalties, and runs for loss, HHS would punt from their own 10 yardline.  MJHS would drive the football for 9 plays eventually ending in the endzone with a 20 yard TD pass; the extra point would be no good.

The COMMANDOS were able to get their 1st first down early in the 2nd Quarter, and that would spark the HHS offense as they would take the ball 64 yards on 13 plays before Howell would connect with #80 Troy Dye for a 2 yard TD pass and catch.  HHS would miss the PAT making the score 6-16.  It didn’t take long for Mt. Juliet to answer, on the 1st play of the ensuing drive; they would get a 50 yard pass reception.  #20 David Priddy saved a TD on that play.  HHS would then force MJHS into a 4th down that they decided to go for, and they would score a TD on a 24 yard run.  The COMMANDOS would drive the ball inside the 20 yardline before the half, but time would expire before they were able to get any points.

Hendersonville got the ball to start the 2nd half, and on the 2nd play, Priddy would get a 55 yard run setting up a 1st and goal on the 10 yardline.  However, on the next play the COMMANDOS would fumble giving the ball to the Golden Bears.  The defense would get a 3 and out forcing Mt. Juliet to punt for the 1st time.  On the COMMANDOS next possession, Howell would get a big run to set up another 1st and goal.  Once again HHS would come away with no points as they would be stopped after 4 plays on the 1 yardline.  MJHS would get the ball off the goaline before being forced to punt again.

HHS would give up a sack on first down of their next possession, and then would have to punt after being put in a 4th and long situation.  The defense would force a 3 and out.  Then the Golden Bears would force HHS to punt.  After another MJHS 3 and out, HHS would drive to the 17 yardline before turning the ball over on downs and allowing Mt. Juliet to run the clock out.

Hendersonville (2-2) will be on the road again next week to take on long time foe Hunters Lane (1-3).  Kickoff will be at 7:00.

The JV plays at home on Monday against Mt. Juliet at 5:30, and the Freshman team travels to White House to take on the Blue Devils with a start time of 6:00.
