COMMANDOS GET ABOVE 500 WITH SHUT OUT
Friday, September 24, 2010

Three take aways and a blocked punt by #48 Colt Cupit helped HHS get a shut out victory in their last non-District game of the 2010 season over the Hunters Lane Warriors.

For the first time this season, the COMMANDOS got the ball to start the game.  Hendersonville looked sharp in the opening possession quickly getting a first down, and then busting a long run that looked to be a touchdown, but the Warriors stripped the COMMANDOS of the ball and recovered it at their own 1 yardline.  The Black & Gold defense took the field after the turnover, and didn’t give an inch on 1st and 2nd down runs by Hunters Lane; on 3rd down #81 Chad Dye would make the first hit on the Warrior running back in the endzone, and #2 Taylor Bozeman along with #76 Chad Clinard would help finish the tackle off for a safety that was the first points of the night putting HHS up 2-0.  #4 Nigel Jones would get a good return on the ensuing kickoff that set up a 9 play scoring drive by the COMMANDOS.  The drive would be capped off with a 7 yard TD pass from #18 Kevin Key to #80 Troy Dye.  Troy Dye would also catch a 2 point conversion from #12 Elijah Howell to give the COMMANDOS a 10-0 advantage.

Hunters Lane would get their 1st first down of the night on the ensuing drive, but HHS would quickly force them to punt.  HHS would drive the ball again before trying a 42 yard field goal that would be no good.  On the Warrior possession, #34 Whit Gray would force a fumble that Bozeman would recover.  The COMMANDOS would capitalize on the turnover with a touchdown that would be scored by #33 Chris Moore on a 5 yard run.  The defense would take the field again after the kickoff, and they would score for the 2nd time of the night; this one would be a 12 yard fumble recovery and run in for TD by #52 Brandon West.  Chad Dye would get a sack on HLHS’s next offensive play, and then after back to back first downs by the Warriors, #57 Joe Townsend would get in on the defensive action by forcing a fumble that #20 David Priddy would recover.  That would be the third take away by the COMMANDOS in 3 straight series.  Set up with good field position, the COMMANDOS would drive to the 13 yard line before throwing an interception with less than 10 seconds left in the first half keeping the score at 24-0.  Hunters Lane would run 1 play for a minimal gain before the teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.

HHS would kick off to start the second half, and the defense would still play strong forcing a 3 and out.  After the punt, Gray would bust off a 38 yard run getting the ball into Warrior territory, but another interception on the next play would end the teams scoring hopes.  HHS would force another 3 and out.  On the punt, off-setting penalties would force Hunters Lane to punt again; this would be the one that HHS would block.   Cupit would get a clean block and Howell would catch the ball off the block and get to the endzone making the score 31-0 after #38 Shawn Bowerman added his 4th extra point of the night.  The defense would force the Warriors to punt again after 3 plays.

#29 Jarius Golden would run the ball on three straight 3rd downs picking up the first down on each keeping the COMMANDO drive going, and on the 12th play of the drive #27 Andrew Pate would score his first TD of the season on a 13 yard run.  Hunters Lane would pick up 1 first down on their next series before Clinard would get a sack on 3rd down making the Warriors punt.  HHS would go three and out.  Hunters Lane would get two more plays off before time ran out, the second would be a sack by #79 Curtis Brown that was the last play of the game with score being 38-0.

Hendersonville (3-2) will be on the back at home next Friday, as they will take on District 9-AAA opponent Wilson Central (2-4) on Paul Decker Field at Memorial Stadium.  Kickoff will be at 7:00.

The JV team will be off this Monday, and the Freshman team will travel to Wilson Central to face Wildcats on Thursday with a start time of 6:30.
