#34 Whit Gray leads the charge for the COMMANDOS with a solid defensive performance and 119 rushing yards to help his team get to 6-2 with a 49-14 victory over the visiting Portland Panthers.  HHS jumped out to a 28 point on the way to their 4th District 9-AAA win Friday night.

The Panthers received the opening kickoff, and the COMMANDO defense forced a punt after three plays.  The Black & Gold offense would start the night off good as well with a 7 play drive that started at the Portland 43 yard line and ended with #12 Elijah Howell taking the ball into the endzone on a 15 yard run for the games first score.  #38 Shawn Bowerman would add the point after to give HHS a 7-0 advantage.  Portland would gain 1 first down on the ensuing possession before being forced to punt.  It would only take the COMMANDOS two plays to score TD number 2 as #8 Hunter Brown would find #4 Nigel Jones for a 69 yard scoring strike.

Portland would get going a little more on offense picking up 2 first downs, but the drive stalled and HHS would get the ball back after a Panther punt.  2 plays later, Gray would get a 68 yard TD run (the longest run of his career so far) to put HHS up 21-0.  After a stop by the kickoff team inside the Panther 20 yard line, the COMMANDOS were able to force a punt after 3 plays.  #2 Taylor Bozeman would block the punt, and #25 Trenton Elsten was able to pick it up and get in the endzone making the score 28-0.  Portland would get going on their next series with a 53 yard run on the 1st play, and then 6 plays later, they would get their first points of the night with a 1 yard TD run.  The COMMANDOS would get a penalty on the PAT that would set up an onside kick for the Panthers that they were able to recover giving them the ball back at the COMMANDO 35 yard line.  The defense would come up big for HHS with #45 Austin Lamb getting a tackle for loss, and then #79 Curtis Brown falling on a fumble that was caused by a bad snap by the Panthers.  HHS was able to run the rest of the time off the clock and head into the locker room leading 28-7.

The COMMANDOS got great field position to start the second half, but couldn’t take advantage of it as they would punt after just 3 plays.  Portland would do the same on their possession.  HHS did get a drive on their 2nd series of the half with #20 David Priddy getting a big run to the 1 yard line, and Howell would finish the drive with his second touchdown of the night.  Portland would fumble the football on the 1st play of their next drive, and #81 Chad Dye would recover for the COMMANDOS on the Panther 17 yard line.  4 plays later, #5 Jarrell Adams would score on a 7 yard run.

The Panthers would get a 12 play scoring drive capped off by a 1 yard TD run.  On the ensuing kickoff, #23 Ryan Rogers would return the kickoff 78 yards, and 2 plays later #27 Andrew Pate would score the last points of the night.  Portland would run 3 more offensive plays before the clock showed all zeros.

Hendersonville (6-2) will be at Memorial Stadium again next Friday as they will host the Beech Buccaneers (7-1) who are leading the District 9-AAA standings.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
