COMMANDOS get win in first Region 5 game – 10-6
Friday, September 05, 2008

HHS relies on defense and turnovers to get the victory at McGavock. On a rainy night at McGavock Stadium, HHS was able to hold on for a hard fought victiory at McGavock 10-6. The COMMANDO defensive unit gave up only 16 rushing yards and 110 total yards to the Raiders.

HHS got the ball to start the game and drove the ball 46 yards on 8 plays before stalling out at the 15 yard line and having to settle for a 32 yard field goal attempt. QB #15 Brandon Hall did a great job handling a high snap in the rain and Kicker #35 Richie Reichenberger nailed the 32 yarder to give the COMMANDOS an early 3-0 lead. After the kickoff, the defense would force the Raiders to a three and out highlighted by a 3rd down sack by senior defensive end #88 Chad Pennington. HHS would get only 1 first down on their next possession, and Reichenberger would have a great punt pinning the Raiders inside their own 10 yard line. The Defense would come up with another 3 and out, this time it was sophomore defensive end #80 Troy Dye who made a big play, forcing McGavock to punt from their own endzone. #47 Nick Yazzie would catch the punt off a bounce and have a big return down to the McGavock 18 yard line.

At the start of the second quarter, the COMMANDOS would capitalize on the short field set up by Yazzie, and Hall connected with #25 CJ Murrell for a 5 yard TD pass to put HHS up 10-0. After a couple of punts by each team, the COMMANDOS would have their first mistake on the wet field with a fumble on their own 23 yard line. HHS’s defense would not let the Raiders score off the great field position as Murrell would pick off a Raider pass in the endzone, and the COMMANDOS would take a knee to end the half.

The 2nd half did not start good for the COMMANDOS as the Raiders return the kickoff into COMMANDO territory down to the 42 yard line. After a first down, HHS’s defense came up big again as Murrell recovered a fumble at the 22 yard line. HHS would return the favor, fumbling and giving the Raiders the ball back at the 34 yard line. This time McGavock would make the COMMANDOS pay with a 34 yard TD pass on the next play. After a bad snap on the PAT, DB #20 Casey Stockwell would make a stop on the holders scramble to keep HHS up 10-6. The Raider defense would force HHS to a three and out, and they would get a great punt return to the HHS 36 yard line. McGavock would then get a 1st down on the 5, but the COMMANDO defense would come up with a goaline stand with Stockwell defending a 4th down pass in the endzone.

HHS would run some time off the clock on the first possession of the 4th quarter, but ultimately have to punt. McGavock was then forced to go 3 and out, and force HHS to go 3 and out as well. Stockwell would come up with an interception giving HHS the opportunity to take a knee and run the clock out for the victory 10-6.

The COMMANDOS will take on Dickson County High School this Friday night at 7:30. The game will be at Memorial Stadium.
