COMMANDOS HEADED TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Friday, November 26, 2010

With the 21-19 win in Memphis, the Hendersonville COMMANDOS are headed to Cookeville to play in the State Championship game.  Special Teams help lead HHS to their third appearance in the State Championship game with a 2 point win over previously undefeated Ridgeway.  The COMMANDOS recovered a kickoff, blocked at punt, blocked a field goal, and returned a kickoff for a touchdown to earn the trip to Cookeville.

Hendersonville kicked off to start the game and with no Roadrunners fielding the kick, #85 Julian Hogin would fall on the live ball to set HHS up at the Ridgeway 41 yard line.  With a 3rd down conversion on a pass reception by #7 Conner Kant, and another 3rd down conversion by #20 David Priddy, the COMMANDOS would have the ball 1st and goal at the 1.  Priddy would finish the drive with a 1 yard TD run.  #38 Shawn Bowerman would add the PAT giving HHS an early 7-0 lead.  Ridgeway would get the ball for the first time on offense and #57 Joe Townsend would get a tackle for loss followed by another tackle for loss by #69 Cayman Russell on 1st and 2nd downs.  HHS would force an incompletion setting up a punting situation.  The Roadrunners would attempt a fake that would not be converted, but a horse collar call against the COMMANDOS would give RHS another chance to convert; they would throw an incomplete pass setting Hendersonville up with great field position.  HHS would get as close as the 5 yard line helped by a 3rd down catch by #4 Nigel Jones, but would get pushed back by the stingy Roadrunner defense forcing a 24 yard field goal that would be wide right.  HHS would push Ridgeway back on their next possession with a tackle for loss by Townsend and a sack and forced fumble by #23 Ryan Rogers.

The second quarter would begin with a 3rd and 18 for Ridgeway which they would convert.  They would go on to convert 2 4th downs on the 14 play 80 yard scoring drive that would tie the game at 7.  HHS would go 3 and out, and the COMMANDO defense would force Ridgeway to do the same.  On the Roadrunners punt, #48 Colt Cupit would get a block that #2 Taylor Bozeman would return 21 yards to the 1 yard line.  #8 Hunter Brown would go in for the score on the next play putting HHS up 14-7.  Russell would come up with a sack on 4th down of the next Roadrunner series giving HHS the ball back.  The COMMANDOS would go 3 and out.  Ridgeway would pick up a couple of 1st downs before they were forced to punt.  Hendersonville would give up a sack on 1st down before Brown connected with #12 Elijah Howell getting the ball to the Roadrunner 15 yard line.  HHS would not be able to get another snap off before halftime.

Rogers would receive the 2nd half kickoff and go 85 yards outrunning all of the Roadrunners to the endzone giving the COMMANDOS a 2 touchdown cushion.  The Black & Gold defense would start the 3rd Quarter strong forcing a 3 and out helped with a sack by Townsend.  Hendersonville would return the ball to RHS after 3 plays.  Ridgeway would get 1 first down before Howell would intercept a pass for the games only turnover.  Hendersonville would pick up 1 first down by penalty before getting sacked on 3rd down, and trying a 32 yard field goal that would be no good.  Ridgeway responded going 80 yards in 2 plays with a 37 yard run followed by a 43 yard TD pass.  They would miss the PAT after a bad snap making the score 21-13.  HHS would quickly give the ball back to Ridgeway with a punt after 3 plays.  On the 3rd play of the next Roadrunner possession, they would rip through the COMMANDO defense for a 72 yard TD run.  The Roadrunners would look to tie the game with a 2 point conversion, but Priddy would deny them the points with a hit short of the goaline.  HHS would get a first down on the last play of the 3rd Quarter.

The COMMANDOS would run 3 more offensive plays before punting the ball back to RHS.  The Roadrunners would drive 85 yards in 10 plays, before attempting to take the lead with a 28 yard field goal.  Townsend would block the attempt and #34 Whit Gray would fall on the loose ball.  HHS could not get the ball moving as they would punt after 3 plays, and the COMMANDOS defense would come up big with a 3 and out of their own.  After the Ridgeway punt, Hendersonville would have the ball at the 45 yard line with 2:26 left in the game.  Priddy would pick up a first down by inches allowing the COMMANDOS to run the clock out with 2 more plays.

Hendersonville (11-3) has earned a berth to the TSSAA 5A State Championship game which will be held at Tucker Field on the campus of Tennessee Tech University.  The COMMANDOS will take on the Columbia Lions (12-2) with the winner being crowned the 5A State Champions.  The Blue Cross/Blue Shield Bowl will be next Friday night.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
