COMMANDOS FALL SHORT
Friday, December 03, 2010

COMMANDOS never lead in the state championship game as they fall 7-28.  HHS held tough for 3 quarters, but after #57 Joe Townsend tied the game at 7 early in the 2nd half with a defensive touchdown; Columbia started to show its dominance.  The COMMANDOS had chances but were unable to score on 4 trips to the red zone.

HHS got the ball first , and looked good on the first play from scrimmage as #8 Hunter Brown connected with #4 Nigel Jones for a 42 yard pass.  Brown would get sacked on the next play, but come back and convert on 3rd down with another strike to Jones.  The COMMANDOS would get the ball to the 20 yard line before being stuffed on 4th and 1 giving the ball to Columbia.  Columbia would be able to pick up 1 first down before being forced to punt.  The COMMANDOS would convert on consecutive 3rd downs with Jones getting one and #20 David Priddy getting another before they would punt the ball back to the Lions.

Columbia’s next drive would be the games’ first score as they would march 82 yards in 8 plays with the big play being a 52 yard pass that set up 1st and goal.  On 2nd and goal, the Lions would go in for a 1 yard TD run giving them the 7 point advantage.  #80 Troy Dye would get a 1st down on the 1st play of the ensuing drive for HHS, but 2 incompletions and a sack later the COMMANDOS would be punting again.  A penalty would negate a long return by the Lions.  After picking up 1 first down, HHS would force the Lions to go backward with sacks by #81 Chad Dye and #34 Whit Gray.  The COMMANDOS would have the ball looking to tie the game, but after getting a first down by a Columbia penalty, HHS would throw an interception.  #21 Jeff Patton would get a big hit on the 1st play of Columbia’s drive, and then he would come up with a fumble recovery as the Lions would try for a 4th down conversion.  Following the turnover, HHS would get a drive going, but end up missing a 39 yard field goal with less than 10 seconds left in the first half.  CHS would take a knee to go into halftime with the touchdown lead.

The COMMANDOS would kickoff to start the 2nd half.  The first play of the Lion offensive series would be the best play for the COMMANDOS all night as #7 Conner Kant would force a fumble after a completed pass.  #2 Taylor Bozeman would pick up the fumble around the 32 yard line and would head towards the endzone, as he was getting tackled, Bozeman pitched the ball to Townsend who rumbled the remaining 24 yards for the score.  After #38 Shawn Bowerman’s PAT, the score was tied at 7 apiece 19 seconds into the second half.  It wouldn’t take Columbia long to regain their lead as on the 2nd play of their next drive, they would connect on a 67 yard TD pass to go back up by 7.  Hendersonville would get a drive going, but would eventually punt.  The Lions would get the ball back and move down the field with ease before scoring on a 15 yard run.  Needing a score, HHS would get going offensively as Gray would rip off a big run followed by a catch by Priddy for back to back 1st downs.  The COMMANDOS would drive to the 5 yard line before getting sacked on 3rd and 2.  The sack put them out of field goal range, and Browns pass would fall incomplete on 4th and 19.

Columbia would extend their lead as with their 3rd consecutive scoring drive, this one being 79 yards capped off with an 18 yard run.  HHS would get a couple of first downs before throwing their second pick of the night.  HHS would then force a 3 and out for their only defensive stop of the second half.  HHS would then drive all the way to the 5 again before taking another sack and giving the ball back to Columbia who would take knee for the championship.

Hendersonville finished the season 11-4 with their third trip to the State Championship.  This was only the 6th season in the COMMANDOS 70 year history that the team was able to get at least 10 wins in a season.  This team has a lot to be proud of with a good season; it is unfortunate that we came up short in the final game.  The team would like to thank all of the fans who have supported us all season long.  It was awesome having the best crowd out of all the games this weekend.
