COMMANDOS PREVAIL BEHIND STRONG OFFENSE
Friday, August 19, 2011

After going down 0-7, HHS took the lead in 1st quarter and never gave it up again to win 43-36 in the season opener.  The COMMANDOS used a balanced offensive attack scoring touchdowns rushing and passing, but gave up 5 passing TD’s to an explosive Bison offense.

Hendersonville would receive the opening kickoff and #3 LaDontez Bryant would bust a big return down the Station Camp sideline for what looked to be an 84 yard TD return to start the 2011 season, however he had stepped out of bounds at the COMMANDO 32 yard line so the Black & Gold offense would start from there.  HHS would not look good to start the game as they would have a bad punt after 3 offensive snaps and then give up a 38 yard TD pass on their second defensive snap.  Down 0-7, the COMMANDOS would get their second chance with the ball, and they would take the ball 66 yards down tying the game at 7 as #20 David Priddy would receive an 8 yard TD pass from #8 Hunter Brown.  The COMMANDO defense would force the Bison to punt on the ensuing possession after giving up 1 1st down.  HHS would march down the field again helped with a big 3rd down catch by #5 Jarrell Adams.  Bryant would cap the drive with a 10 yard TD run to give the COMMANDOS the lead that they would not give up.  After #38 Shawn Bowerman’s extra point, the COMMANDOS were up 14-7.  Station Camp would have to start at their own 2 yard line after Bowerman’s kickoff would bounce off the Bison return man out of bounds.  HHS would not let them out of the bad field position forcing a 3 and out, and the Bison would have a bad punt setting HHS up with great field position as the 1st quarter ran out.

#81 Chad Dye would have a big reception on the 1st play of the second quarter, and 4 plays later Priddy would score a rushing touchdown from 1 yard out to put the COMMANDOS up by 2 scores.  It wouldn’t take long for the Bison to cut into the lead as their next drive would be a 1 play 87 yard pass play for a TD.  On the ensuing kickoff, Adams would get a big return and a Station Camp penalty would set up HHS’s offense at the Bison 35 yard line.  A 30 yard run by #29 Jarius Golden would give the Black & Gold a 1st and Goal.  Quarterback Brown would score this TD with a 1 yard run to make the score 28-14.  Again the Bison responded quickly with another pass TD, this one of their second offensive snap for a 68 yard score.  They would miss the PAT which made the score 28-20.  A penalty on the kickoff return would put HHS on their own 15 yard line.  The COMMANDOS would go backward before eventually getting a safety on an initial grounding call in the endzone putting the Bison within 6 points 28-22.  Station Camp would move the ball into HHS territory with a chance to take the lead before #83 Zach Gillespie would force a fumble that Adams would recover.  The COMMANDOS had the ball deep in their own territory and Bryant would get a big run on the first play to get the ball to midfield.  SCHS would force a punt after 3 more plays.  #32 Drew Davis would get a sack on third down of the Bison next possession ending their drive, and HHS would run 2 plays to run out the clock of the first half.  The teams would go to the break with the COMMANDOS on top 28-22.

Station Camp came out in the second half ready to play and after receiving the kickoff to start the half, they looked poised to take the lead back from the COMMANDOS, but on a 4th and short try deep inside HHS territory #40 Chauncey Thomas would come up with a tackle for loss to end the Bison drive.  The COMMANDOS would look to extend their lead in a hurry as Adams would have a big catch on the 1st play of the next drive before #2 Ryan Patrick would catch a 16 yard TD pass, Brown’s second of the night.  Priddy would convert on the 2 point conversion to put HHS back up by 14 points.  The Bison would get a great return to midfield and the COMMANDO defense would come up big with a sack and forced fumble by #78 Brandon Bourk on 2nd down and a pass break up by #45 Austin Lamb on 3rd down to force a punt.  Adams would get a good punt return, but HHS would turn the ball over after a tipped pass was intercepted by a Bison defensive lineman.  Station Camp would capitalize on the turnover by scoring on a 48 yard TD pass on the drives 2nd play.  Hendersonville’s next series would eventually end up with a punt after getting a penalty on a converted 4th down conversion.

The COMMANDO defense would force a 3 and out on the next possession.  #48 Colt Cupit would block the punt and Patrick would get the blocked punt and run in the remaining 10 yards for the COMMANDO score.  HHS would force the Bison to punt again, but a penalty would set up a 4th and short that SCHS would convert.  On the next play for the Bison, Davis would force a fumble that #49 Ryan Dillehay would recover for HHS.  The COMMANDOS would only run 3 plays before punting the ball away.  Lamb would make a good tackle on the punt pinning Station Camp on their own 8 yard line.  The Bison would slowly move the ball down the field going 15 plays while converting 3 3rd downs before scoring with a 12 yard pass on a 4th and 5.  SCHS would also convert a 2 point conversion cutting the lead to only 7 points.  With not much time left and no timeouts, Station Camp would be forced to attempt an onside kick that Patrick would recover.  The COMMANDOS would have to run 3 more plays to run all of the time off the clock ending the game 43-36 giving HHS the victory in the season opener.

Hendersonville (1-0) will travel to Franklin (0-1) to take on the Rebels next Thursday night.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.  The game is the Pizza Hut Thursday Night Lights game of the week and will be broadcast live on MY30 WUXP, Comcast channel 14.

The JV team will play Monday at Station Camp with start time of 6:00, and the Freshman team will play their first home game next Thursday night against Mt. Juliet with a kickoff set for 6:30 am Memorial Stadium.
