WIN IN MEMPHIS
Friday, September 09, 2011

For the second straight season, HHS traveled to Memphis and came back with a victory.  Last season the COMMANDOS were able to upset the #1 ranked Ridgeway Roadrunners in the 5A Semi-Finals 21-19, and this year HHS was able to defeat Germantown.  The Black & Gold was able to contain the high powered Red Devil offense that was averaging 41.5 points per game featuring Shatavious Lowe who had 550 rushing yards and 9 TD’s coming into the game to capture a 28-7 win.

Hendersonville received the opening kickoff, and was unable to get moving having to punt after 3 snaps.  Germantown would muff the point and #83 Zach Gillespie was there to recover for the COMMANDOS.  HHS would take advantage of their good fortune converting on 2 third downs, the first by #5 Jarrell Adams with a catch, and the second being a run by #20 David Priddy that set up 1st and goal.  The 1st and goal at the 1 yard line would turn into a 3rd and goal from the 19 after the COMMANDOS would commit 2 penalties.  HHS was still able to find the endzone on third down as #8 Hunter Brown would find Adams who would go up and make a good catch for the first points of the night.  #38 Shawn Bowerman would add the point after putting HHS up 7-0 early in the contest.  The Red Devils would get 1 first down on their first offensive possession before being forced to punt.  Another COMMANDO penalty would nullify a 20 yard punt return by Adams putting HHS at their won 37 yard line.  #3 LaDontez Bryant would get a nice run on 3rd down, but the COMMANDOS would fumble the ball to the Red Devils at the 7 yard line on the next play.

GHS was forced to punt again after picking up 1 first down.  The COMMANDOS would get into Germantown territory on the next series, but 2 more penalties would lead to a punt that #45 Austin Lamb would down at the 1 yard line.  The Red Devils would get out of the hole converting on 2 straight 3rd downs before  #79 Curtis Brown and #55 Ryan Ward would combine for a tackle for loss on the next 3rd down to get the defense off the field as GHS would punt.  The COMMANDOS would quickly be forced to punt with a 3 and out.  HHS would hold Germantown to another punt which tuned out to be the last play of the first half with the score 7-0.

Both teams would take advantage of their only offensive series of the 3rd Quarter as Germantown would get the kickoff, and methodically drive down the field 80 yards for the score.  The Red Devil scoring drive would consume 8:27 off the clock and take 16 plays, scoring on a 6 yard run to knot the score at 7.  The COMMANDOS would answer with an 8 play drive of their own capped off with a 4 yard TD run by Bryant to put HHS back up 14-7.

Germantown would elect to go for a 4th down conversion on their next drive, but Ward would pressure the quarterback forcing an incompletion and turnover on downs.  Bryant would get a big run for the COMMANDOS before Brown would connect with Priddy for his second passing TD of the night, this one being 31 yards to put HHS up by 2 scores.  #52 Brandon West would come up big for the COMMANDO defense on the next series as he would get a sack on 3rd down and force a fumble on 4th down.  The Red Devils would pick the fumble up, but #23 Bailey Rogers would end up getting a tackle for a loss of 28 yards setting up HHS with a 1st and goal at the 6 yard line.  It would take 4 downs, but Hunter Brown would score on a 1 yard run making the score 28-7.  Germantown would get their biggest run of the night on their first play of the ensuing possession, but would not gain much more before the clock ran out with HHS up 28-7.

Hendersonville (3-1) will play a District 9-AAA game this Friday night as they will travel to Portland to face off against the Panthers (0-4).  Kickoff will be at 7:00 pm.

The JV game has been canceled this week.  The Freshman will return to Memorial Stadium after getting 2 road wins as they will play Portland on Thursday night with a start time of 6:30.
