HOMECOMING DEFEAT
Friday, September 23, 2011

Riverdale snaps Hendersonville’s 8 game home winning streak at Memorial Stadium on Homecoming night.  The COMMANDOS led most of the first half against #1 ranked Riverdale, but the Warriors proved to be too strong for HHS in the second half.  Nearly 1,200 yards of offense was put up in the game between the two schools as Riverdale won 49-34.  Mistakes hurt the COMMANDOS as they had too many penalties, missed tackles, turnovers, and missed opportunities to beat a team as good as Riverdale.

The COMMANDOS would get the ball first and the offensive production would start from the first play as #5 Jarrell Adams would make a catch thrown from #8 Hunter Brown for a 49 yard gain.  HHS would get the TD 8 plays later with #20 David Priddy catching a 2 yard TD pass.  #38 Shawn Bowerman would add the PAT to put HHS up 7-0 early in the contest.  Riverdale would pick up a couple of first downs with their first offensive possession before being forced to punt.  The punt would take a Riverdale roll giving HHS the ball at their own 1 yard line.  HHS would get themselves out of the terrible field position as #3 LaDontez Bryant picked up a first down on a 3rd down catch and run, however the COMMANDOS would eventually punt.  RHS would gain 2 more first downs before their first score came on a 38 yard TD pass to tie the game at 7.  Hendersonville would quickly regain the lead as on their next series Adams would get a 25 yard reception on the first play before Bryant would catch a 41 yard TD two plays later making the score 14-7.  On the Warriors next possession, the COMMANDOS would drop an interception before #40 Chauncey Thomas came up with a tackle for no gain on 3rd down that was the last play of the 1st Quarter.

The 2nd Quarter started with a Warrior punt, and HHS would be set up to extend their lead as they had the ball at the RHS 32 yard line.  The COMMANDOS would go backward and end up missing a 53 yard field goal.  With Riverdale taking the ball, HHS would miss their second opportunity for a turnover as they would drop another interception.  Riverdale would pick up a first down on a long pass play on 3rd and long, but on the next play, #79 Curtis Brown would force a fumble that #54 Trevor Conner would recover ending the Warriors scoring chances.  The COMMANDOS would be forced to punt after giving up a sack on a 3rd down play.  Riverdale would knot the game back up with a 2 play drive that covered 55 yards.  The Warriors scored on a 33 yard TD pass after picking up 22 on a running play.  HHS was able to convert one 3rd down on their next possession as Priddy would get a 29 yard reception, unfortunately the COMMANDOS would punt 4 plays later.  Bowerman’s punt would pin the Warriors at their own 5 yard line.  RHS would get the ball off the goaline with an 11 yard run on their first play.  Then they would take the lead as they marched the ball down the field in 11 plays capped off by a 28 yard TD run on a 4th down play.  The PAT would fail making the score14-20 with just under 1 minute left in the half.  A big kickoff return would give the COMMANDOS the ball around midfield, but the Black & Gold would throw an interception giving the Warriors a chance to add to their lead.  Riverdale could only get 2 snaps off before halftime, and the teams would go into the break with the score 14-20.

Riverdale would add to their lead after getting a great kickoff return to start the 2nd half.  A big pass on the drives’ third play would set up 1st and goal at the 3 yard line, and RHS would have no problem running it in from there.  They would also convert a 2 point conversion to give them the 2 touchdown advantage.  #35 Believe Kabasu would gain 53 yards on a run up the middle on the COMMANDOS first offensive snap of the second half.  Two plays later HHS would answer the Riverdale score with a 21 yard TD reception by Bryant.  Riverdale would hurt the COMMANDO defense on 3rd down again getting a long pass that would get the ball inside HHS territory.  Priddy would end the Warrior drive by getting his second pick of the year.  Down by 7, the COMMANDOS would not do anything off the turnover as they would call for a Bowerman punt after 1 first down.  Two plays after the punt, the Warriors found themselves in the endzone again, this one coming on a 73 yard TD pass to make the score 21-35.  The COMMANDOS would fumble on their second play of their next possession giving the Warriors the ball at the HHS 27 yard line.  The Black & Gold defense would get the Warriors to a 4th down that they would convert followed by a 3rd down conversion that would go for 6 with a 13 yard TD pass.  Bryant would keep HHS in the game as he returned the ensuing kickoff to the RHS 19 yard line giving HHS another great scoring opportunity.

The COMMANDOS would get the 7 yard line before turning the ball over for the second straight time; this one on an interception.  The deflated COMMANDOS would give up another TD in only 3 plays on a 55 yard run.  Trying to cut into the lead, HHS would drive the ball 80 yards on 10 plays with big runs by #34 Corey Jones.  Kabasu would get the TD on a 5 yard run.  Hendersonville would force a 3 and out.  Bryant’s 51 yard catch on the first play after the punt would set HHS up to score as Kabasu would once again find the endzone.  The PAT would fail making the score 34-49.  The COMMANDOS were unable to recover an onside kick, and Riverdale would get 2 first downs to allow them to run out the clock, handing the COMMANDOS their first Homecoming loss since 2005.

Hendersonville (4-2) will renew their cross town rivalry next week as the COMMANDOS will play host to the Beech Buccaneers (4-2).  Kickoff at Memorial Stadium will be at 7:00.

The JV team is off this Monday.  The Freshman will travel to Beech on Thursday with the game scheduled to start at 6:30.
