COMMANDOS KNOCK OFF BEECH
Friday, September 30, 2011

Hendersonville held Beech scoreless through 3 quarters in a 23-6 victory.  #38 Shawn Bowerman had a perfect night connecting on 3 field goals (26 yd, 48 yd, and 47 yd) and going 2 for 2 on extra points to help lead the COMMANDOS.  His 3 field goals were the only points scored by either team throughout the first 3 quarter of play.  #3 LaDontez Bryant had 193 all-purpose yards and led the COMMANDOS in both rushing and receiving.  With the win HHS improves their record to 5-2.

The COMMANDOS received the opening kickoff and looked sharp on offense early in the contest as their first 2 plays were first down runs by #34 Corey Jones, but after a penalty, a sack, and an incompletion, the drive would only net 12 yards and the COMMANDOS were forced to call on Bowerman for his first punt of the night.  On the Bucs first offensive possession, they would pick up 1 first down on a 3rd down conversion before being forced to punt.  After HHS got the ball back, Bryant would get his first big run on the first play of the drive, and HHS would get another first down before punting.  A good punt would give HHS the field position advantage.  The Black & Gold defense would keep the field position in their favor by forcing a 3 and out.  A bad snap on the Beech punt would set up the COMMANDOS inside the red zone at the 19 yard line.  HHS was unable to pick up a first down and called on Bowerman to put the first points of the game on the board.  Bowerman would be good on the 26 yard field goal giving HHS an early 3-0 lead.  Beech would get the ball around midfield after the kickoff, but Hendersonville’s defense would not allow them to gain much, forcing a punt after 3 plays that would be the last play of the first quarter.

After the teams traded punts in their first possessions of the 2nd quarter, HHS would have the ball at midfield.  The COMMANDOS would not be able do anything with the good field position, punting after 3 plays.  Bowerman’s punt would put BHS at their own 4 yard line.  The Bucs would gain 3 1st downs converting on 2 3rd downs before the COMMANDOS would force a turnover on downs.  With the half fast approaching, Bryant would get another big gain on the first play of this possession that would get the ball to midfield.  HHS would pick up 1 more first down as #81 Chad Dye would catch a pass thrown by #8 Hunter Brown to allow Bowerman to get his second field goal of the night, this one from 48 yards out on the last play before halftime.

Down 6-0, Beech came out the locker moving the ball as they received the 2nd half kickoff, converting on a 3rd and 3 for a first down.  Dye would come up with a tackle for loss, then a holding penalty would negate a 1st down run allowing HHS to hold and force a punt.  Back up deep in their own territory, #20 David Priddy would change the field position to favor HHS with a 37 yard run to start the COMMANDOS drive.  Bryant would then come up with a 3rd down conversion for Hendersonville.  HHS would run 3 more plays, but for minimal gain as they would settle for a 47 yard field goal that put the COMMANDOS up 9-0.  Beech would get a big pass play on their first play of the ensuing possession followed by a run that set up a 1st down at the COMMANDO 29 yard line.  The Black & Gold defense would hold their ground allowing only 1 more yard as Priddy would break up a pass on 4th down giving HHS the ball back.  On the 2nd play of the next drive, Brown would connect with Bryant again to set a first and goal.

Priddy would score the first TD of the night with a 6 yard run on the first play of the 4th quarter.  Beech would answer taking the ball 80 yards converting 3 4th downs and 2 3rd downs to get their only points of the night with a 1 yard TD run on 4th down.  Down by 10 points, the Bucs would attempt a 2 point conversion, but #45 Austin Lamb would break up and make a big hit just short of the goaline and #27 Andrew Pate would help out to make sure the 2 point try was denied.  Pate would then recover an onside attempt by the Buccaneers.  The COMMANDOS would get a 31 yard run on the first play by Bryant followed by a 4th down conversion that set up 1st and goal.  BHS would hold Hendersonville out of the endzone for 3 plays, but Bryant would score on a 2 yard run on 4th down to put HHS up 23-6 with 35 seconds left in the game.  The Bucs would look to get more points on the board, but #2 Ryan Patrick would intercept a pass and kneel as time ran out giving HHS their second straight victory over Beech.

Hendersonville (5-2) will travel to the Waveyard next week to take on County rival Gallatin (6-1).  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.

The JV team will play at Beech on Monday with a start time of 6:00.  The Freshman will conclude their season on Thursday night at Memorial Stadium as they will take on Gallatin at 6:30.
