DROWNED AT WAVEYARD
Friday, October 07, 2011

HHS traveled to Gallatin, and after getting down 0-14 early in the first quarter, the COMMANDOS looked helpless.  The Green Wave dominated HHS in all 3 phases of the game.  Offensively, Hendersonville was only able to produce a field goal until finally scoring a TD with 40 seconds left in the game.  The COMMANDOS defense never forced a punt until late in the 4th quarter.  HHS also gave up a TD on special teams as GHS blocked a punt and returned it for the score.  The COMMANDOS will be off next week before traveling to Mt. Juliet on October 21.

Gallatin got the ball to start the game, and after getting a good return on the kickoff, they would go on a 9 play 60 yard scoring drive.  The COMMANDOS appeared to have the Green Wave stopped, but GHS would convert on a 4th and 5 to keep the drive going and then scored with a 30 yard TD pass on 3rd and 11.  The PAT would put GHS up 0-7.  Hendersonville would not get much on their kickoff return, starting inside their own 20 yard line.  The COMMANDOS would go three and out after dropping a pass on their first 3rd down.  #38 Shawn Bowerman’s punt would get blocked and then ran in for another Gallatin score.  Down by 14, the COMMANDOS were unable to do anything with ball going three and out again.  This time a good punt by Bowerman would give HHS the field position edge.  On the first play of the Green Wave drive, #32 Drew Davis would force a fumble that #71 Spencer Garvin would recover setting up HHS to cut into the deficit with the ball at the Gallatin 21 yard line.  After 3 plays that netted negative 3 yards, Bowerman would come out to put the COMMANDOS first points on the board with a 41 yard field goal.  A 52 yard pass on the Green Wave next possession would be put GHS inside COMMANDO territory on the last play of the first quarter.

A big run by the Wave set up a 1st and goal at the 5 yard line.  3 plays later, Gallatin would extend their lead with a 1 yard TD run.  The COMMANDOS would finally get things going offensively with a couple of first downs, but the drive would end prematurely as they would throw an interception.  GHS would look to pad their lead as they got the ball moving picking up another 3rd down conversion with a 36 yard pass play.  They would pick up 1 more first down before the HHS defense stoned up and forced a turnover on downs.  The COMMANDOS would then go 3 and out.  After receiving the punt, the Green Wave would kneel to run the clock out for the 1st half with the COMMANDOS only gaining 43 yards compared to the Green Wave’s 187 yards.

Getting the ball to start the 2nd half, the COMMANDOS would have a chance to start to dig out of the 3-21 hole they got in during the first half, but a fumble on the first offensive snap of the half would give Gallatin the ball at the COMMANDO 21 yard line.  The defense would hold before giving up a 3rd and 8, and 3 plays later, the Green Wave would capitalize off the turnover with a TD run making the score 3-28 early in the 2nd half.  Hendersonville would get the ball moving with back to back first down catches by #5 Jarrell Adams and then #81 Chad Dye.  #20 David Priddy would get a run that set up 1st and goal at the 6 yard line followed by a run by #3 LaDontez Bryant that would get it to the 3.  An intentional grounding call would back HHS to the 19 yard line for 3rd and goal.  HHS was unable to convert the 3rd down, and trailing by 25 points, they would go for the TD on 4th down, but GHS would knock the ball out of the COMMANDOS hands on what looked to be a touchdown.

After the goaline stand, Gallatin would take control of the game, going 85 yards on 14 plays gaining 6 first downs and converting on 3 3rd downs before scoring on a 1 yard TD run.  HHS would move the ball inside the red zone on the ensuing drive before turning the ball over on downs again.  Gallatin would have their only punt of the night after only 3 plays, and HHS would then go on a scoring drive capped by #27 Andrew Pate’s 10 yard TD run with 40 seconds left in the game.  After the kickoff, the Green Wave would just have to kneel on the ball to claim the victory at the Waveyard.  The win puts Gallatin in 2nd place in the District 9-AAA standings while Hendersonville falls to 3rd place.

Hendersonville (5-3) will be off next week before traveling to Mt. Juliet (7-0) the following week.  Game time will be at 7:00.  The Golden Bears will play next week as they travel to Cookeville (5-2).

The JV team will have their last game of the 2011 season versus Gallatin this Tuesday with a start time of 1:00 pm at Memorial Stadium.
