COMMANDOS WIN HOMECOMING GAME 35-13
Friday, September 19, 2008

The COMMANDOS get their second Region 5 victory against Hillwood led by Senior Defensive Back/Running Back #26 Zack Hill who had 3 interceptions, and 32 rushing yard.  Hillwood outplays HHS for most of the first half; COMMANDOS settle down and play harder in the 2nd Half to get the win.  HHS’s defense only allowed the Hilltoppers to move the ball inside COMMANDO territory on the first and last series of the game.  HHS is now 4-1 (2-0) for the 2008 campaign.

The Hilltoppers got the ball first, and went 68 yards in 3 plays to score the first points of the night.  Hillwood had the COMMANDOS out-flanked on all 3 plays, and ran a Quarterback sweep around the left end for the 41 yard score.  HHS was able to answer the opening Hilltopper score, as #25 CJ Murrell rushed for 4 of his 97 yards (team high) on the night and took the ball into the endzone to knot up the score at 7 a piece.  The drive was kept alive on a key 4th down run by Quarterback #12 Elijah Howell.  The COMMANDOS defense came up with a 3 and out to give HHS the ball back at the Hillwood 47 yard line, but the COMMANDOS would waste the great field position as Hillwood would force a punt after 3 more plays.

Hillwood’s next possession would go into the 2nd Quarter and it would be another 3 and out with help from a Hilltopper bad snap and a pass break-up by Hill.  The Hilltopper drive would continue thanks to a ‘Running into the Punter’ penalty by the COMMANDOS giving Hillwood a first down.  However, 2 plays later Hill would grab his first interception of the night and return it to the Hillwood 13 yard line.  HHS would capitalize on the field position this time as #17 Jon Snavely would take the 2nd play from scrimmage 11 yards to put the COMMANDOS up for good.  On Hillwood’s next possession, they would gain 1 first down before HHS would get another interception, this time it is #9 Austin Harris who comes up with the turnover.  The COMMANDOS would be forced to punt on the possession following the interception in 3 plays but Howell would connect with #88 Chad Pennington for the first catch of his career for 11 yards, and that would be the only completion of the night for HHS.  #59 Roman Shutt came up big with a sack for a loss of 12 yards on the Hilltopper next possession, and they would be forced to punt.  The teams would then trade punts, Hillwood’s was forced with help from a pass break up by #3 Spencer Armstrong, and another sack, this time for a loss of 9, by Shutt and #69 Cayman Russell.  HHS would have 2 plays before going to the locker room up 14-7 at Halftime.

The COMMANDOS would take control of the game in the 3rd Quarter, and they got started by scoring on their first offensive play of the half, a 38 yard run by Murrell.  The field position was set up by Armstrong’s 52 yard return, and 22 seconds into the 2nd Half the COMMANDOS were up 21-7.  Hillwood would get 1 first down on their first possession of the 2nd Half, but Shutt would hit the QB as he threw a pass and Hill would get his 2nd interception of the night, but HHS would go 3 and out after the turnover.  Hill would get his 3rd pick on the next Hillwood possession, and this time the offensive unit would make the Hilltoppers pay as Harris capped off the drive with a 12 yard TD run.  Now down 28-7, the Hilltoppers would try to throw more, but with pass break-ups by Armstrong and #16 Austin Winski, the COMMANDOS would force another Hillwood punt.

2 plays into the 4th Quarter, #42 Maverick Flowers would score from 8 yards out to put HHS up 35-7.  The HHS defensive would get off the field in 3 plays again, and HHS would begin to try to run the clock out, however a fumble(HHS’s only turnover of the night) would give the ball back to Hillwood.  Hillwood would run the football and ultimately score on the last play of the game as time ran out.  The PAT was not attempted because it would make no difference in the outcome of the game, making the final score 35-13.

The COMMANDOS will be off next week.

The Freshman team will host Wilson Central at 7:00 on Thursday September 25 at Memorial Stadium.
