COMMANDOS BEAT BUCS, MOVE ON TO SEMIFINALS

Hendersonville (9-4) defeated the Beech Buccaneers (8-5) for thesecond time this season in the Quarterfinals of the 5A playoffs.  The rematch was a lot closer than the regularseason game as the COMMANDOS escapedwith a 1 point win to survive in the playoffs. The COMMANDOS jumped out to a14-0 lead in the 1st quarter, but the Bucs fought back and took a17-22 lead of their own in the 3rd quarter.  Hendersonville responded and was able toregain the lead and hold on for a 23-22 victory.  The win puts HHS in the Semifinals for thesecond consecutive year.

HHS received the opening kickoff and was forced to punt after 3plays.  Beech would pick up 2 first downson their first possession of the game, one of them coming on a 4thdown play before #78 Brandon Bourk was able to pressure the quarterback forcinghim to throw the ball away for intentional grounding.  #45 Austin Lamb would get back to backtackles on 3rd and 4th down to force a turnover on downs.  #3 LaDontez Bryant would get a big run on thefirst play of the next offensive possession, and a few plays later #8 HunterBrown would find #81 Chad Dye for a first down catch.  The promising drive would end prematurely witha fumble at the Beech 10 yard line.  TheBlack & Gold defense would force a 3 and out as #5 Jarrell Adams would comeup with a 3rd down tackle.  AfterAdams returned the punt to the Buc 33 yard line, #20 David Priddy would get aTD run on the first offensive snap for the first score of the night.  #38 Shawn Bowerman would add the PAT to givethe COMMANDOS an early 7-0lead.  On the ensuing drive, BHS got a 1stdown run on the first play before Lamb would get a tackle for loss and #79Curtis Brown would tip a pass that #40 Chauncey Thomas intercepted setting theoffense up with a short field for the 2nd straight time.  Hendersonville would give up a sack on thefirst play, but a 3rd down conversion on a reception by Bryant wouldset up 1st and goal.  HunterBrown would run it for the score from 1 yard out.

Down 2 scores, the Bucs would respond with an 18 play scoringdrive that covered 80 yards.  The drivewas kept alive with a pass interference by the COMMANDOS on a 4th down. Beech would eventually score with a 5 yard run.  HHS would get a penalty on the PAT, and theBucs would decide to go for 2.  Beechconverted the 2 point try to make the score 14-8.  Hendersonville’s next drive would be keptalive by a facemask on a 3rd down play, and then Priddy would grab a3rd down reception.  The COMMANDOS would get the ball to the 10yard line.  Bowerman would kick a 32 yardfield goal after a TD pass was called back due to penalty.  The 3 points would make the score 17-8 with19 second left in the first half.  Beechwould run 1 play before half, and Bourk would force a fumble that the Bucswould fall on allowing them to run the clock out on the half.

Beech would score on their first series of the 2nd halfafter converting a 3rd and 18 with a pass.  After the conversion, the Bucs would pick up3 more 1st down en route to a TD that would come on a 20 yard run tocut the COMMANDOS lead to 2points.  HHS would go 3 and out on theirfirst possession of the 2nd half. Beech would then go on a 9 play 90 yard scoring march to take the leadfor the first time 17-22.  Down by 5points, the COMMANDOS would respondas Adams picked up a 3rd down conversion and 2 plays later Bryantwould go 47 yards to regain the lead 23-22. HHS would go for 2, but were unsuccessful.

Beech would continue to convert 3rd downs on their nextpossession, but the COMMANDOSeventually forced them into a punting situation.  The Bucs would fake the punt and pick up thefirst down, but a holding penalty would nullify the successful fake punt, andBeech would then punt to the COMMANDOSwith 7:36 left on the clock.  HHS wouldnot give the ball back to the Bucs as they would drive the 16 plays for thevictory.  The game winning drive washelped with a 3rd down run by #35 Believe Kabasu, a 3rddown catch by Dye, and a 4th down run by Bryant that allowed HunterBrown to kneel and run out the clock giving the COMMANDOS  the 1 pointvictory.

The COMMANDOS (9-4) willtravel west to Henry County (13-0) to take on the top seeded Patriots.  The game will be the day after Thanksgivingon November 25 with kickoff scheduled for 7:00. The Patriots ended Ridgeway’s season in the Quarterfinals beating theRoad Runners 24-14 at Henry County.
