BIG PLAYS GET COMMANDOS BEAT
Friday, August 24, 2012

Turnovers on offense and big plays given up on defense led to a 10 point defeat at Memorial Stadium.  Hendersonville’s record got evened up at 1-1 Friday night with the 17-27 loss to the Franklin Rebels.  The COMMANDO defense gave up 4 big plays for touchdowns as Franklin (1-1) scored on plays of 90, 62, 48, and 24 yards and on the other side of the ball, HHS had 5 turnovers.

The COMMANDOS got the ball to start the game and would pick up a first down on the 2nd play of the game, but HHS would throw an interception on the next play for their 1st turnover of the night.  #58 Taylor Felice would pounce on a fumble on Franklin’s first offensive snap to give Hendersonville the ball back deep in Rebel territory.  It would take HHS 4 plays, but they would end up with a 1st and goal situation.  After getting the ball inside the 5 yard line, the COMMANDOS would have to settle for a 23 yard field goal by #24 Bryce DeGuira.  The field goal would give HHS an early 3-0 lead.  On the ensuing possession, #52 Brandon West would get a sack on 2nd down that set up a 3rd & 21 for the Rebels.  The 3rd down snap would be the first big TD play of the night as they would run 90 yards for the score and take a lead that they would not give up.  HHS would try to answer as they would move into scoring position with the help of a pass interference call, but after a fumble and a holding penalty, the COMMANDOS would have to attempt a 50 yard field goal that would be no good.  HHS would force a 3 and out on the Rebels next offensive series with #23 Bailey Rogers breaking up a 3rd down pass attempt.

HHS would get the ball moving again on their next possession, but the drive would end prematurely as the COMMANDOS would fumble on the 3rd play of the 2nd quarter for their 2nd turnover.  After a couple of 1st downs, the Rebels would be forced to punt.  FHS would down the punt at the 1 yard line.  On their own 1 yard line, HHS would pick up a first down before being forced to punt the ball back to Franklin.  After trading punts again, the Rebels would find their next big play, this one being a 62 yard run.  The PAT would be no good to make the score 3-13.  Hendersonville would go nowhere in 3 plays following the score and had to punt the ball with 42 seconds left in the 1st half.  Franklin would take advantage of their possession as they would score again, this one being on a 48 yard pass to give them a 17 point advantage heading into the break.

After a good kick return by Franklin, the COMMANDO defense would force a punt helped by pressure put on by #55 Ryan Ward & #32 Drew Davis on the Rebel 3rd down play.  Down by 3 scores, Hendersonville needed to move the ball, but after a loss on first down, HHS would throw 2 straight incompletions and have to punt.  FHS would gain a first down before West would get a tackle for loss on 4th down to give HHS the ball back.  The COMMANDOS would cut into the lead on this possession as #3 Cameron Turner would score on a 44 yard run on the 9th play of the drive.  HHS would force Franklin to punt on the ensuing possession.

Hendersonville would have their 3rd turnover on their next possession with an interception after gaining 1 first down.  The Rebels would capitalize on their good fortune with a 24 yard TD run to cap a 2 play 30 yard scoring drive.  It would take HHS most of the 4th quarter to get another score as they would have a 22 play drive that would end with Turner scoring his 2nd TD of the night on a 10 yard reception.  The score would now be 17-27 with only 1:20 left in the game.  #48 Colt Cupit would recover an onside kick for the COMMANDOS, but HHS would throw an interception on the first play of the drive.  The defense would hold Franklin and get the ball back to HHS, but on the final play of the game, the Rebels would intercept another pass to ensure the victory for them.

Hendersonville (1-1) will get back to district play next Friday night as they travel to Wilson Central (2-0) to take on the Wildcats.  Kickoff will be at 7:00.

The JV (1-0) team will play their first road game as they will travel to Mt. Juliet on Monday.  That game will start at 6:00, and the Freshman team (2-0) returns to Memorial Stadium on Thursday to play against Wilson Central.  The Freshman will begin their game at 6:30 pm.
