LATE TD COSTLY FOR COMMANDOS
Friday, October 19, 2012

In an offensive battle that saw the only one punt attempt (the lone punt was by HHS and was blocked), Hendersonville looked to have the game in hand with a 4 point lead and less than 30 seconds left in the game, but a 54 yard TD pass would be costly as the COMMANDOS fall 31-34 to Mt. Juliet.  HHS was led on offense by #27 Andrew Pate who had 143 rushing yards and 2 TD’s along with 81 receiving yards and one more touchdown and #34 Corey Jones who had 175 rushing yards.  On the other side of the ball #19 Braden Schwerdt had a career high 13 tackles and 1 interception.

Hendersonville received the opening kickoff, and would take their first possession 80 yards for an early 7 point lead.  On the scoring drive, #81 Chad Dye would have a good catch, and Jones would have a couple of good runs.  The drive ended with Pate finding the endzone for the first time of the night with a 37 yard run.  It would only take the Golden Bears 6 plays to answer the score as they would tie the score on a 3 yard run.  HHS would go 3 & out on their next drive, but an MJHS penalty on the punt would give the COMMANDOS a fresh set of downs.  Hendersonville would not take advantage of the penalty as they would again go 3 & out.  On this punt attempt, the Golden Bears would get a block.  The block punt coupled with an HHS penalty would set Mt. Juliet up with the ball at the COMMANDO 17 yard line.  MJHS would run 3 plays and gain 0 yards, but were still able to get points on the drive as they connected on a 30 yard field goal to go up 7-10.

HHS would answer the field goal with 3 points of their own as Jones and #35 Believe Kabasu would have good runs setting up a 44 yard field goal that #24 Bryce Deguira would connect on to make the score 10-10.  Mt. Juliet would regain the lead on the ensuing drive as they would go down the field on 9 plays and end with a 32 yard TD pass.  Hendersonville would pick up 1st downs on 4 straight plays on the next series with a run by Pate followed by a catch by #11 Jackson Duke and then runs by Jones and Pate.  This would move the ball into scoring territory, but a fumble recovered by HHS followed by an incompletion would force HHS to attempt a 39 yard field goal.  The attempt would fail as the ball hit the left upright.  Mt. Juliet would run 2 plays before the teams broke for halftime with the score 10-17.

MJHS would receive the 2nd half kickoff, and on their first offensive snap of the half (just like their first offensive snap of the first half) they would have a big run.  After 2 more plays, Schwerdt would come up with the only turnover of the game as he intercepted a pass attempt.  Hendersonville would take advantage of the turnover with Pate getting a nice run to put the ball in the red zone.  #21 Anthony Tate would convert a 4th down and on the next play #48 Colt Cupit would score on an 8 yard run to tie the game at 17.  Four plays after the kickoff, MJ would take the lead back with a 76 yard TD pass.  Jones would have 2 good runs on the next COMMANDO possession before Pate converted on a 4th down run just before the end of the 3rd quarter.

Pate would finish the drive with a 4 yard touchdown run on 4th down.  The TD was the 17th play of the 80 yard scoring drive.  Schwerdt would get a good tackle inside the 20 yard line on the kickoff, but the COMMANDO defense would allow a 20 yard run on the 1st snap to give MJHS some breathing room.  The Golden Bears would convert 2 4th downs to keep their drive going before being held to a 45 yard field goal.  The score would give MJHS a 3 point lead with about 3 minutes remaining.  After the kickoff went into the endzone, HHS would gain only 4 yards on 3 plays and then jump offside’s to set up a 4th and 11 at their own 19 yard line.  #2 Jeremias Elston would hit Pate with a pass, and Pate would take it 81 yards for the go ahead score with 1:20 left in the game.  MJHS would pick up 1 rushing and 1 passing 1st down to get the ball to midfield, then on 3rd and 13, they would hit a 54 yard TD pass behind the COMMANDO secondary to take a 3 point lead with 20 seconds left in the game.  HHS could not connect on a few desperation passes as they would fall 31-34.

Hendersonville (4-5) will play their last game of the 2012 season next week at Lebanon (0-9).  Kickoff will be at 7:00.

The JV (3-2) finished their season last week falling to Beech 24-28 last Tuesday.  The Freshman will travel to Tullahoma on Tuesday October 23 as they will play in the Lions Bowl against the NGA Falcons.  Both the Freshman COMMANDOS and the Falcons are undefeated this season.  The game will kickoff at 6:00 and will be followed by Riverdale versus Shelbyville Freshman matchup.
