Quick Start helps HHS to 35-14 win over Glencliff
Friday, October 03, 2008

#47 Nick Yazzie and #25 C.J. Murrell help COMMANDOS get off to a great start at Glencliff as the Black and Gold improve their overall record to 3-1 and 2-0 in the region.  The COMMANDO defense gave up another 1st Quarter TD, but didn’t allow another score until the 4th Quarter.

HHS won the coin toss and chose to receive the opening kickoff; Yazzie would receive it and take it 61 yards to score the first touchdown of the night, and put HHS up 7-0 before the first snap of the football game.  After the COMMANDOS kicked to Glencliff,  Yazzie would come up big on the first defensive play of the game as well with a sack of the Colts quarterback.  The defense would go on to force a 3 and out.  After the punt HHS would get the ball at the Colt 35 yard line.  With great blocking from the entire offensive line, Murrell would take the ball all the way to the endzone on the first offensive play for the COMMANDOS to make the lead 14-0 early in the 1st Quarter.  Glencliff would hit a 38 yard pass on their next possession, and the COMMANDOS would hold the Colts to a 4th and 7 play from the 21 yard line; Glencliff’s quarterback would then run the ball right through the COMMANDO defense the entire 21 yards for Glencliffs’ first score of the night which cut the lead to 14-7.  Energized from the score, the Colts would force a 3 and out by the COMMANDOS.  However, after the punt, Yazzie would get a tackle for loss on the Colts first offensive play, and then #16 Austin Winski would come up with the COMMANDOS first interception of the night giving HHS the ball deep in Colt territory.  After a 4th and 1 conversion, #9 Austin Harris would run 15 yards to put HHS up 21-7.  On the ensuing possession, it only took 2 plays before the COMMANDOS would come up with their second interception of the night, this one by Yazzie.

HHS was able to capitalize on the turnover again, as HHS went 44 yards in 9 plays capped off by a Yazzie 6 yard TD run.  The defense would allow one first down before forcing another Glencliff punt.   This time the COMMANDO offense would go 80 yards in 9 plays lead by a 53 yard run by Murrell down to the 2 yard line, and 3 plays later quarterback #15 Brandon Hall would sneak in for HHS’s 5th score of the night, putting HHS up 35-7.  Glencliff would threaten to score again before the end of the half, but #59 Roma Shutt would get a sack on the Glencliff quarterback to end the Colts hopes of getting on the board before halftime.

Glencliff would get the ball to start the 2nd half, and the COMMANDO defense would force a 3 and out, but the Colts faked a punt on 4th and 5 to keep the drive alive.  #26 Zack Hill would break up a 4th down pass to end the Colt drive at the COMMANDO 49 yardline.  HHS would then drive all the way down to the Glencliff 8 yard line before fumbling the ball.  The COMMANDOS defense would come up with a stop, forcing the Colts to go three and out after the turnover.

HHS would threaten to score again with their next possession, but a 47 yard field goal attempt on the first play of the 4th Quarter would be no good.  Glencliff would then take the ball 80 yards in 6 plays, helped by a blown coverage by the COMMANDO defensive backs, to score their last TD of the night.  HHS would go three and out after a failed onside kick attempt by the Colts, but a roughing the punter penalty would give the COMMANDO offense another chance to move the football.  This time the COMMANDOS would give the ball back to Glencliff after a failed 4th down conversion attempt.  Glencliff would get the ball back into HHS territory, but #4 Nigel Jones would come up HHS’s third interception of the night at the HHS 4 yardline.  The Colts would force one more punt by HHS, but would only have two plays before the game ended with the score 35-14.

The COMMANDOS will be back home at Memorial Stadium next Friday night, taking on the Antioch Bears at 7:30 PM.

The Freshman team will play their last home game against rival Gallatin at 7:00 Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
