Strong 3rd Quarter Lifts HHS to win over Antioch
Friday, October 10, 2008

Antioch got the ball first and drove down the field on 7 plays before #47 Nick Yazzie would intercept a pass at the COMMANDOS own 6 yard line.  Pressure on the quarterback by defensive ends #88 Chad Pennington and #80 Troy Dye forced the Antioch player to thrown the ball off his back foot, Yazzie stepped in front to get the pick.  HHS would not capitalize off the turnover as they would go 3 and out.  HHS would return the favor of the 3 and out as Dye and #77 Austin Clinard would combine for a sack for minus 11 yards on 2nd down helped by good coverage by the defensive backs.  Special Teams would provide the first points of the night as Antioch lined up to punt, #59 Roma Shutt would get a block and #34 Whit Gray fell on the ball in the endzone to put HHS up 7-0.  The lead would be short lived as the Bears returned the ensuing kickoff to the COMMANDO one yard line.  The Black & Gold defensive would force Antioch to use a timeout, but on 4th down would give up a two yard TD pass.  After a roughing the kicker penalty on HHS, Antioch decided to go for 2 and converted with another pass completion.  HHS would run 5 offensive plays on their next possession before getting a great punt from #35 Richie Reichenberger.

Antioch’s next possession would go into the 2nd Quarter and HHS would force a punt that the Bears tried to fake, but #15 Brandon Hall would be in coverage and the Bears turned the ball over on downs.  With good field position, HHS would drive down (with help from an Antioch personal foul) to eventually get 31 yard Field Goal by Reichenberger to regain the lead 10-8.  After the kickoff, HHS would force a Bear punt, and a 61 yard return by Yazzie would come back because of a block in the back by HHS.  The COMMANDO offense would give up back to back sacks which forced a punt out of their own endzone.  The defense would respond with a 3 and out, but another special teams mishap by roughing the punter would give Antioch new life.  Another 4th down conversion by the Bears on 4th and 15 would lead to an Antioch 15 yard TD pass, but #20 Casey Stockwell would block the PAT to make the score 10-14 with 1:12 left in the half.  HHS would get the ball back, and after a 20 yard reception by #44 Andrew Hight and anther 20 yarder by Yazzie the COMMANDOS were able to get another Field Goal by Reichenberger, this one a 23 yarder to make the score at halftime 13-14.

The start of the 2nd half looked great as Yazzie took the kickoff 64 yards to the Antioch 25 yardline, however HHS would get no points as they turned the ball over on the 6 yardline.  Antioch would make the COMMANDOS pay for the turnover.  The Bears hit a 52 yard pass on their 1st play, and 3 plays later they got a 43 yard TD pass to make the score 13-21 early in the 3rd Quarter.  HHS responded well as Hall hit Stockwell on a key 3rd down play, and #25 CJ Murrell would rip off a 54 yard run down to the 3 yardline.  Yazzie would run it in from there for the TD, and Hight would catch Hall’s pass on the 2 point try to tie the score at 21.  On the kickoff #5 Patrick Cash hustled down the field and recovered a muffed kick to give HHS the ball back on the Bear 25 yardline.  Murrell would energize the COMMANDOS as he hurdled a would be Bear tackler, and HHS would eventually get another TD.  This one was a 9 yard pass from Hall to Yazzie, and the COMMANDOS would lead for the rest of the night.  On Antioch’s next possession, Stockwell would break up a pass attempt, and then #26 Zack Hill would get an interception and return it 20 yards to the Bear 21 yardline.  HHS would capitalize on the turnover after 4 plays as #9 Austin Harris would run the ball in from 10 yards out to put HHS up 35-21.

HHS would force Antioch to go 3 and out on the next possession, and Yazzie would return the punt 34 yards to the Bear 18 yardline.  2 plays later #3 Spencer Armstrong ran in from 12 yards out to give HHS a 42-21 lead.  It would take the COMMANDOS 13 plays to get the ball back, but Hill came up with another pick, and he would return this one 18 yards to the Bear 31 yardline.  HHS could not capitalize this time as they would fumble on the 8.  Cash would come up with his 2nd fumble recovery of the night on the Bears next offensive series, and it would take the COMMANDOS getting one first down before they were able to take and knee and run out the clock to get the Region win.  HHS is now 4-1 and 3-0 in Region 5.

The COMMANDOS will play at Overton next Friday night, taking on the Bobcats at 7:00 PM.

The Freshman team will play their last game of the 2008 season at Franklin Tuesday night at 7:00.
