COMMANDOS clinch play-off berth
Friday, October 17, 2008

HHS clinched its first play-off berth since being a 4th seed in 2006 with a win 38-21 over the Overton Bobcats Friday night.  The win lifts the COMMANDOS to 5-1, 4-0 and drops the Bobcats to 1-7, 1-4.  HHS is now guaranteed to be a least the 3rd seed from Region 5.  The win was the 3rd straight for the COMMANDOS against Overton.

Nick Yazzie accounts for 3 TD’s in the win.  Overton got the ball to start the game, and the HHS defense set the tone as they forced a 3 and out highlighted by #57 Joe Townsend’s sack on 3rd down.  A good punt return by Yazzie was brought back due to penalty, but in 3 plays #3 Spencer Armstrong would find paydirt with a 35 yard TD run to put HHS up 7-0.  The 3 play drive went 49 yards, and was all on the ground.  Overton got one first down on their next possession before #25 CJ Murrell would force a fumble that #20 Casey Stockwell would fall on to give HHS the ball back.  The COMMANDOS would then go down the field in 6 plays with help from a 53 yard pass from #15 Brandon Hall to Yazzie.  Yazzie would cap the drive off as he rushed into the endzone from 3 yards out to put HHS up 14-0 with 3:27 left in the 1st Quarter.

Trailing by 14, Overton got rolling of offense as they marched the ball 62 yards with 4 1st downs all the way to the HHS 8 yardline.  The COMMANDO defense would stone up on the goaline forcing a Fieldgoal attempt.  The Bobcats would come away with no points as Yazzie would block the kick and #80 Troy Dye would land on it.  The COMMANDOS would then have a mistake of their own, as 2 plays later, they would fumble the ball to the Bobcats at the HHS 22 yardline.  The Bobcats would capitalize on the HHS turnover as on the 2nd play they would score on a 35 yard TD pass cutting the score in half.  HHS would be forced to punt on their next possession as #55 Kaleb Davis fell on a fumble after a QB Sack by Overton.  The Black and Gold defense would respond on Overton’s next possession.  HHS would hold the Bobcats to 3rd down, and #54 DJ Cull would get a hit in the backfield that forced a fumble, and #63 Brady Kelly was there for the recovery at the Overton 16 yardline.  4 plays later, Yazzie would score his 2nd TD of the night, this one a 6 yard reception.  After the kickoff, HHS’s defense would make Overton lose 2 yards on 3 plays and  force a punt.  Yazzie’s 45 yard punt return turned into only 28 after a COMMANDO penalty giving HHS the ball at the Bobcat 38 yardline.  Yazzie would then come up with a 29 yard catch to the 9, but HHS would have to settle for a 26 yard Fieldgoal by #35 Richie Reichenberger putting the COMMANDOS up 24-7 at halftime.

HHS would get the ball to start the 2nd half, and had a good drive going helped out with long runs by Murrell and #9 Austin Harris before a 4th down play would come up short giving Overton the ball backed up at the 2 yardline.  Overton would then march the ball 98 yards on 12 plays capped off by a 25 yard TD pass, and the defense would only force one incompletion on the 8 pass attempts by Overton.  The Bobcats would miss the PAT making the score 24-13.  After the kickoff, HHS would run 3 plays and then fumble on the Overton 46 yardline.

On the first play of the 4th Quarter, #69 Cayman Russell would intercept the Bobcat Quarterback as he was getting pressured and tried to get rid of the ball.  On the first play after the turnover, HHS would capitalize as Hall would connect with Yazzie for his 3rd TD of the night, this one a 29 yard reception.  Davis would come up big on the 1st play of Overton’s next possession with a sack for a loss of 11 yards, and the COMMANDOS would force a 3 and out.  #34 Whit Gray would come up with a big 3rd down run on HHS’s next possession, and then Harris would score from 8 yards out to make the score 38-13.  Overton was able to go 56 yards on 6 plays and get their 3rd TD pass of the night, this one for 20 yards.  Troy Dye was able to come up with the onside kick attempt by Overton, and the COMMANDOS would get the 2 first downs they needed to run out the clock.

The COMMANDOS will play Gallatin next Friday night at Memorial Stadium.  Kickoff for the COMMANDOS versus Green Wave game is scheduled for 7:30.
