SEASON OPENER FAVORS COMMANDOS
Friday, August 22, 2014

Hendersonville was able to get a season opening District 9-AAA road victory as they traveled to Wilson Central able were able to return to HHS with a 45-7 victory over the Wildcats.  The COMMANDOS jumped out to a 24-0 lead sparked by a fumble recovery and a spectacular punt return by #6 Jarcques Wordlaw, and they never looked back.  HHS was up 31-0 at halftime before going on to win.  The team had a strong defensive performance and 6 different players scored touchdowns.

The COMMANDOS would receive the opening kickoff, and get a drive going with a first down catch by #19 Braden Schwerdt.  #2 Jeremias Elston would then convert a 4th down attempt to continue the drive into Wildcat territory.  The drive would stall and HHS would call on #24 Bryce DeGuira to put 3 points on the board with a 30 yard fieldgoal.  Following DeGuira’s kickoff, the Black & Gold defense would take the field, and after getting a tackle for loss on the first snap of the series, #72 Chris Kacprowski would recover a fumble to set HHS up inside the WCHS 20 yard line.  Three plays later #20 Terrell Carter would fumble the ball just before crossing the goaline, but #57 Jacob Throneberry would fall on the ball in the endzone for Hendersonville’s first touchdown of the 2014 season.  HHS would force a punt after 3 plays on the next series, and Wordlaw would have an excellent return setting the COMMANDOS up with a 1st and goal.  On the first play of this series, Elston would find #37 Sam Pate for a TD to extend the lead to 17-0.  The defense would again force the Wildcats to a 3 and out.  On this series, the offense would continue to look good as Elston would throw his second touchdown pass of the night, this one to Schwerdt that was good for 26 yards and 6 more points.

Wilson Central would be forced to another punt as the second quarter began, and the COMMANDOS would return the punt after 3 plays.  WCHS would convert a 4th down play to gain a first down on the possession, but after a couple of good defensive plays by Kacprowski, HHS would receive another punt.  A first down run by #36 Jon Reed would get the ball moving for the COMMANDOS this time before Carter would bust loose for a 41 yard TD to put HHS up 31-0.  On the first play of the next drive, #11 Caleb Head would make a great play to intercept a Wilson Central pass and give HHS the ball back inside Wildcat territory.  The COMMANDOS were unable to take advantage of this turnover as they would fumble the ball back to WCHS.  After a pass break up by Schwerdt, HHS would give Wilson Central a first down due to penalty, and then another penalty on the COMMANDOS would negate an interception by Wordlaw as the first half came to a close.

Hendersonville’s defense would get a stop to start the 2nd half, and on the team’s first possession of the half, #3 Cameron Turner would have a big 1st down run followed by Wordlaw scoring with a 24 yard run.  On their next possession, the Wildcats would get on the board with a 2 yard TD run that capped off an 8 play drive.  On the ensuing kickoff, #10 Jack Towe would have a good return setting the COMMANDOS offense up at the Wildcat 15 yardline; 3 plays later #21 Frankie Small would score the final TD of the night with a 5 yard run.

Hendersonville would force another 3 & out early in the 4th quarter, and after getting the ball back, #25 Reggie Harris and #4 Mike Harris would have some good runs.  The COMMANDO drive would eventually end with them turning the ball over on downs.  Wilson Central would have time to run 3 more plays before the clock ran out with HHS getting the victory on Friday Night Lights.  Thanks to all who came out or watched on MYTV 30.

Hendersonville (1-0) will have their first home game next Friday night as they will face off against the Hunters Lane Warriors (0-1) at Memorial Stadium.  This will be a non-District contest for the COMMANDOS and kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

The JV team will open their season on Monday at Memorial Stadium as they will take on Wilson Central with a start time of 5:30.  The Freshman team (0-1) will go on the road next Thursday to Mt. Juliet to take on the Golden Bears.  Kickoff for their game is set for 6:30.
