COMMANDOS WIN AT DANNY WATKINS STADIUM
Friday, September 05, 2014

Hendersonville traveled to Lebanon and captured their first victory at the new home of the Blue Devils.  The win pushed the COMMANDOS record to 3-0 this season and was their second District 9-AAA win this season.  HHS played well in all three phases of the game, and had many players make big plays in the 48-6 District win at Lebanon.

Lebanon received the opening kickoff and got a good return to start the game with the ball near midfield.  Hendersonville’s defense would be ready to play as #10 Jack Towe set the tone for the game with a tackle for loss on the first play of the drive, then on 3rd down, #19 Braden Schwerdt would combine with #20 Terrell Carter on a nice pass break up to force a punt.  The COMMANDOS wouldn’t look as sharp to start their first offensive series as they would have an incomplete pass followed by a run for no gain and then a penalty set up a 3rd and 18.  The Black & Gold would come through however as on the 3rd down, #2 Jeremias Elston would find #3 Cameron Turner on a pass play that would go 62 yards for the first score of the night.  #24 Bryce DeGuira would add the PAT to give the COMMANDOS an early 7-0 advantage.  Another good kick return by the Blue Devils would give them the ball in HHS territory.  A 1st down run by the LHS quarterback would get them into scoring territory, but after 3 good defensive plays by HHS, Lebanon would try to convert on 4th down and Schwerdt would get a stop with a tackle for loss giving the ball back to Hendersonville.  HHS would get first down runs by Carter and #6 Jarcques Wordlaw before Elston would score with an impressive 22 yard run.  HHS would continue to have problems slowing down the Blue Devil kick returners.  A big return coupled with a penalty by the COMMANDOS defense on the opening play of the possession would set LHS up with the ball inside the HHS 20 yard line to start this drive.  They would get the ball to the 9 yard line before #37 Sam Pate knocked down a 4th down pass attempt to end the drive and keep the Blue Devils off the scoreboard.  Turner would have a good run to get the ball away from the COMMANDO endzone as the 1st quarter came to an end with the Hendersonville up 14-0.

Early in the 2nd quarter, Carter would score with a 71 yard reception to put HHS up 21-0.  DeGuira would put this kickoff in the endzone ensuring that there would be no return.  #21 Frankie Small and #93 Preston Brown would combine to get a sack on the Lebanon quarterback backing them up inside their own 10 yard line and helping force a punt.  Wordlaw’s punt return would set HHS up at the 7 yard line, and it would only take 1 play to make the score 28-0 as Towe scored on a run.  After another touchback, LHS would pick up a 1st down on a pass play, but after 3 more plays the defense would force a punt as Schwerdt got a good stop on 3rd down.  Wordlaw would get this return all the way to the endzone, however a penalty on the COMMANDOS would negate the score.  Small would cross the goaline on the offensive drive with a 25 yard run for another HHS score.  Lebanon was able to gain 1 first down on their next offensive series before being forced to punt again.  On this drive, Schwerdt would get a first down reception before the HHS drive would stall, and the COMMANDOS would call on DeGuira for a fieldgoal, he would connect on the 32 yarder to put HHS up 38-0.  Lebanon would turn the ball over on downs on the next series, and with 9 seconds left in the half, HHS would use DeGuira again for points as he connected on a 45 yard fieldgoal.  The kickoff would be the final play of the half with HHS leading 41-0.

Hendersonville would receive the second half kickoff, and they were able to recover an onside attempt by the Blue Devils.  Hendersonville would fumble on the 3rd play of the drive, and it would only take Lebanon 1 play to put points on the board as they scored with a 43 yard TD run.  Hendersonville’s next drive would start inside Lebanon territory, and after a couple of tough runs by Small, #31 Shane Watrous would score with a 21 yard run.  #38 Jacob Harris would add this PAT for the COMMANDOS.  Following the kickoff, LHS would pick up a couple of first down as time ran out in the 3rd quarter.

#62 David Conley would get a sack on the first play of the 4th quarter which came on a 4th down play giving the COMMANDOS the ball back.  HHS would use a 14 play drive to eat up most of the clock in the 4th quarter as they moved the ball down the field.  The drive would eventually end with a failed 4th down attempt.  Lebanon would only have time to run one offensive play before the clock struck all zeros and HHS got the 48-6 victory.

Homecoming will be next week for Hendersonville (3-0) as they will take on the Brentwood Bruins (0-3) next Friday night at Memorial Stadium.  The COMMANDO WALK will be at 5:00, and hopefully everyone can come out and support the team.  Kickoff for the game will be at 7:00.

The JV team will play on Monday at Memorial Stadium versus the Lebanon Blue Devils and kickoff will be at 6:00.  The Freshman (1-2) got their first win last week, and they will play at home again this Thursday as they will take on Station Camp on Paul Decker Field with a kickoff at 6:30.
