COMMANDOS DEFEAT BEECH TO WIN DISTRICT
Friday, October 24, 2014

Hendersonville was able to clinch the 2014 District 9-AAA title with a one point victory over Beech at Memorial Stadium.  Beech would score with 9 seconds left in the game, and elect to go for 2.  #57 Jacob Throneberry would make the initial hit on a 2 point try by the Buccaneers as a host of COMMANDOS would join in, ensuring the stop short of the goaline.  After being behind for most of the first half, the COMMANDOS would never trail in the 2nd half as they improved to 8-1 on the season.

Beech would receive the opening kickoff and waste no time getting their offense going.  A long pass completion on the game’s first play would move the ball into HHS territory.  BHS would keep moving the ball down the field which included another pass completion on a 3rd down.  The Buccaneers would end up scoring with a 1 yard TD run to take an early 0-7 lead.  The COMMANDOS would go 3 & out on their first possession after #6 Jacques Wordlaw would have a nice kickoff return to midfield.  Hendersonville would also get a 3 & out on Beech’s 2nd offensive series.  Starting at midfield again, the COMMANDOS would pick up a first down run by #36 Jon Reed before being forced to attempt a 52 yard field goal.  The attempt would be no good.

The Black & Gold defense would force a Buccaneer 3 & out for the second consecutive possession following the missed field goal.  After Wordlaw’s punt return, the COMMANDOS would start at the Buccaneer 26 yard line this time.  On the 2nd play, #3 Cameron Turner would score with a 21 yard run.  #24 Bryce DeGuira would add the PAT to tie the game at 7.  #41 Chandler Gant would get a tackle inside the 20 yard line on the ensuing kickoff.  The Buccaneers would put together an 84 yard drive that would take up most of the 2nd quarter as they moved the ball down the field on the COMMANDO defense.  The drive that would end with a 1 yard touchdown run took 16 plays and included a 4th down conversion.  With 43 seconds left in the 1st half, Wordlaw would have another good return as HHS would start at their own 42 yard line.  After not getting much on the 1st two plays of the series, quarterback #2 Jeremias Elston would find Wordlaw on 3rd down to move the ball into BHS territory.  After a short run by Turner, Elston would connect with Wordlaw again on the last play of the 1st half for a 37 yard TD to send the teams to halftime with the score tied 14-14.

Hendersonville got the ball to start the 2nd half and methodically move the ball down the field.  The 13 play drive by the COMMANDOS would end with nothing however, as after getting the ball to the 2 yard line, HHS would turn the ball over with a fumble.  Hendersonville would give up one 1st down to Beech before forcing a punt on the Buccaneers first possession of the 2nd half.  After this punt, Hendersonville would start 37 yards away from the endzone.  Elston would find #49 Drew Dillehay to get HHS inside the red zone.  Reed would have a good run that set up a 1st & goal as the third quarter came to a close.

On the 1st play of the 4th quarter, Turner would score again with a 3 yard run to give Hendersonville their first lead of the game 21-14.  After a touchback on the kickoff, HHS would have the Buccaneers in a 3rd & long situation, but they would have a big run to get into HHS territory.  Beech would tie the game back up on the next play with a 19 yard TD run.  Starting around midfield again, Reed would have a 1st down run for HHS.  Back to back penalties by the COMMANDOS would put them in a long yardage situation, but Elston would connect with Turner on a pass play that set HHS up with a 1st & goal.  #10 Jack Towe would run the ball to the 1 yard line before Elston would run it in for the score.  Hendersonville would force a 3 & out on the next series, but a muffed punt would give Beech the ball back around midfield.  A big run on the 1st play would get the ball inside HHS territory as the Bucs would go on an 8 play scoring drive.  The TD would be score with 9 seconds left with a 1 yard run.  Beech would elect to go for 2, attempting to take a 1 point lead.  Throneberry would make the first hit as HHS would then gang tackle the Beech running back short of the goaline.  Up by 1 point, #8 Drew Richard would recover an onside kick which would allow the COMMANDOS to kneel the ball and claim the 28-27 win.

Hendersonville (8-1) will play their last regular season game of the season next week at Station Camp (5-4).  The Halloween night game is a District 9-AAA game and kickoff will be at 7:00.
