ON TO THE 2ND ROUND
Friday, November 07, 2014

Hendersonville was able to defeat Independence 49-20 at Memorial Stadium to move on to the 2nd Round of the class 6A playoffs.  The COMMANDOS had a pair of rushers go over 100 yards, led by #20 Terrell Carter who rushed for 212 yard and had an interception on defense.  #3 Cameron Turner would also top the century mark as he went for 106 yards and 3 scores.

Independence received the opening kickoff and moved the ball down the field with a 10 play drive that would end in the endzone with a 6 yard TD pass.  Down 0-7, the Black & Gold offensive unit would respond as Turner would score his first touchdown of the night with a 40 yard run on the 4th play of the COMMANDOS first offensive series.  IHS would get a first down by pass on the ensuing possession before #31 Shane Watrous would hit the QB on 3rd down helping to force an incompletion.  The Eagles would then have to punt.  #19 Braden Schwerdt would block the punt with #10 Jack Towe picking it up giving HHS the ball at the Eagle 40 yard line.  On the 2nd play of this drive, Carter would scamper to the 6 yard line.  After losing yards on 1st down, #2 Jeremias Elston would find #6 Jarcques Wordlaw for a 10 yard TD pass to give HHS a lead that they would not surrender.  Independence would move the ball on their next possession looking to tie the game, after a couple of 1st down passes, they would have the ball in the redzone.  HHS would get three stops to set up a 4th down that would be the 1st play of the 2nd quarter.

#36 Jon Reed would get a stop on the Eagles short of the 1st down marker to force a turnover on downs.  Carter and Turner would do the damage on this drive for the COMMANDOS as Carter got a big run before Turner scored with a 16 yard run.  #24 Bryce DeGuira’s point after would make the score 21-7.  On the next series, IHS would get a first down before Wordlaw got a nice stop followed by a 3rd down stop by #21 Frankie Small that forced a punt.  The Eagles would fake the punt and pick a first down to maintain possession.  In HHS territory, the Eagles would gain a couple of first downs before Carter ended their drive by getting an interception near the goaline.  Starting at their own 3 yard line, the COMMANDOS would go 97 yards on 12 plays to score with 12 seconds left in the 1st half.  Turner would get the touchdown with a 7 yard run.  Independence would kneel the ball after the kickoff to send the teams to the break with HHS up 28-7.

Independence would try an onside kick to start the 2nd half, and the unsuccessful attempt would give HHS the ball at midfield.  Carter, Towe, and Reed would have good runs as Hendersonville moved the ball; Elston would score with a 1 yard run to make the score 35-7 early in the 3rd quarter.  Independence would pick up a first down on their first possession of the 2nd half.  Then after the COMMANDOS failed to recover a fumble, #72 Chris Kacprowski would get a sack that helped HHS force a punt.  HHS wouldn’t do much on this drive as they picked up 1 first down before punting the ball back to the Eagles.  Small would get a fumble recovery for the COMMANDOS on the first snap following DeGuira’s punt giving HHS the ball at the 20 yard line.

Facing a 4th down as the 4th quarter began, HHS would give the ball to Carter, and the offensive line would pave the way for the conversion setting up a 1st and goal.  Towe would find the endzone on the next play with a 6 yard run.  Independence would get their offense going on their next drive as they had a 1st & goal after a pair of completions.  The Eagles would score with an 8 yard run to make the score 42-14.  HHS would recover an onside kick, and drive the ball down the field.  The drive would end with #4 Mike Harris scoring on a 7 yard run.  Independence would score one more time, but miss the PAT before Hendersonville was able to kneel the ball to run out the clock.

Hendersonville (10-1) earned one more week with their victory and they will host Centennial (9-2) in the 2nd Round of the TSSAA class 6A playoffs next Friday night.  Kickoff will be at 7:00 at Memorial Stadium.
