CENTENNIAL KNOCKS OUT COMMANDOS
Friday, November 14, 2014

Hendersonville got knocked out of the TSSAA 6A playoffs by Centennial in a 2nd Round game at Memorial Stadium.  HHS would be forced to punt on each of their first 5 possessions, and the Cougars forced the COMMANDOS to six 3 & outs during the game.  Hendersonville also racked up over 100 yards in penalties in the 17 point loss.

The COMMANDOS would receive the opening kickoff, and would punt to CHS after three offensive snaps.  Centennial showed they were ready to play on both sides of the ball as they would score on their 3rd offensive snap with a 44 yard TD run to take an early 7 point lead.  HHS would go 3 & out again on their 2nd possession.  Following the punt, the Cougars would have the ball near midfield, but after gaining one first down, a sack on 4th down would give the ball back to the COMMANDOS.  On this series for HHS, a first down catch by #3 Cameron Turner would be negated by penalty as Hendersonville went 3 & out for the third consecutive possession.  #36 Jon Reed would get a tackle for loss on the next Centennial offensive series as the COMMANDO defense would force the Cougars to punt the ball back to HHS.  Hendersonville would gain their first 1st down of the night on this drive with #10 Jack Towe’s tough run near the end of the 1st quarter.

A Hendersonville penalty would turn a 3rd and 4 into a 3rd and 9 to start the 2nd quarter, and #2 Jeremias Elston would pass to Towe for a 6 yard completion; the 6 yard gain would have continued the HHS drive had they not had the penalty but instead, HHS would punt.  A big run by CHS would move the ball into HHS territory before the COMMANDOS gave Centennial another first down by penalty.  The COMMANDOS would hold the Cougars to a field goal here, and CHS would hit a 37 yard field goal to take a 10 point lead.  Elston would rush for a first down to start the next drive, but after a 1st down catch by Turner came back with a penalty, the COMMANDOS would punt again.  Hendersonville would force CHS to a three and out to get the ball back.  #19 Braden Schwerdt would make a 1st down catch to start the next HHS drive.  Another Hendersonville penalty would back HHS up, but Schwerdt would come up with another catch to set up 1st & goal for HHS.  Two plays later, Turner would score the only points of the night for Hendersonville with a 2 yard TD run to make the score 7-10.  This would be as close as HHS would get to the Cougars as they responded with a drive that ended with a 2 yard TD run with 10 seconds left in the half.  Hendersonville would only have time for 2 plays before heading to the locker room down 7-17.

Centennial would get the ball to start the 2nd half, and after picking up a first down by pass, Towe would force the QB out of bounds on 3rd down to force a punt.  Hendersonville would go three and out on their first offensive possession of the 2nd half.  Following the punt, the Cougars would start inside HHS territory.  CHS would use their ground game coupled with a Hendersonville penalty to move the ball on this possession that would end with the final score of the night on a 1 yard TD run.  Down 7-24, HHS would not respond as they would go three and out on the ensuing possession.  The Black & Gold defense would return the 3 & out giving the COMMANDOS the ball back.  #49 Drew Dillehay would catch a pass to start this drive to get into CHS territory.  Reed would have a 1st down run before another Dillehay catch as the 3rd quarter ended.

Reed would have another 1st down run as the 4th quarter began, but back to back incompletions would force HHS to attempt a 25 yard field goal that would hit the left upright and be no good.  Centennial would be able to pick up 1 first down run on their next possession before being forced to punt.  On the next HHS drive, a sack followed by intention grounding and an incompletion would lead to another punt.  Hendersonville would look to have CHS in a punting situation after three plays on their next drive, but a penalty by the COMMANDOS would give the Cougars a first down.  CHS would then convert a 3rd down with a pass before turning the ball over on downs.  With time winding down, HHS would only be able to run 4 more plays before the clock ran out ending Hendersonville’s season.

The loss ended Hendersonville’s season.  The COMMANDOS finished with a 10-2 overall record and were the District 9-AAA Champions.
