What Does Commando Football Mean To You: Spending a lot of time with people that become your family.

Derek is an exception athlete that plays 3 sports for Hendersonville High School.  He excels in all of his sports as well as works hard in the classroom.  He is a 2 time ‘ALL-COUNTY’ player while also being ‘ALL-REGION’ in 2017 and was voted by his teammates as the teams ‘MOST VALUABLE BACK’.  He is looking forward to his senior season where he is expected to be one of the team’s leaders.  He has the ability to be a starter and an impact player in all three phases of the game.  He is likely to return this fall as one of the team’s starting running backs, will compete for a starting spot as a kick returner, and should be a starter in the defensive secondary.  He needs to continue to work hard and have a good offseason to gain some strength and size, and he will be ready to lead the COMMANDOS for the 2018 campaign.  His play on the field and leadership off the field will have a major impact on how much success the team has this fall.

2017-Started at running back all season and was the teams 2nd leading rusher with as well as catching the 2nd most passes.  Was voted by his teammates as the teams’ ‘MOST VALUABLE BACK’ while also earning ‘ALL-REGION’ honors for his efforts throughout the season.  Was also named 2nd team ‘ALL-COUNTY’ as a running back.  In addition to having an excellent season on offense, he also was a starter on Special Teams and a significant contributor in the defensive secondary.  Ended the season with 595 rushing yards on 61 carries with 3 TD’s.  Led the team in rushing twice and in carries once.  Had a career high 176 yards that included his career long rush of 68 yards in the teams win at Gallatin; also led the team with 123 yards versus Beech.  His 11 rushing attempts versus Beech was also the team high.  Carried the ball at least once in all 11 games.  Scored 2 rushing touchdowns against Gallatin while adding one versus Beech.  Caught passes in 7 games during the season finishing with 14 receptions for 150 yards and 2 more TD’s.  His 32 yard reception against Centennial is his career long and went for a touchdown.  Also caught passes versus Beech, Gallatin, Rossview, Mt. Juliet, and in the 1st round of the class 6A playoffs.  Led the team in receiving yards against Mt. Juliet while leading the team in receptions versus Beech, Rossview, and Mt. Juliet.  Other receiving TD came against Gallatin.  Recorded 13 stops on defense.  Had a career high 4 tackles in the season opener against Blackman.  Also had tackles versus Centennial, Beech, Franklin, Wilson Central, and Rossview.  Returned 4 kickoffs totaling 84 yards.  Had 1 kickoff return against Centennial, Lebanon, Rossview, and Mt. Juliet.

2016-Had an excellent sophomore season earning a starting spot at running back on offense while also being a starter at cornerback on defense for most of the season.  Ended the season with 220 rushing yards on 45 attempts with 1 touchdown while adding 8 receptions for 135 yards.  On defense he recorded 9 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 pass break ups.  Earned honorable mention ‘ALL-COUNTY’ honors for his efforts throughout the season.  Ran the ball in 9 of the team’s 10 games while catching passes in 7 games.  His best rushing output of the season was 51 yards against Hillsboro.  His season long rush of 16 yards came against Cane Ridge.  His touchdown came in the team’s season opening victory over McGavock.  His season long reception came against Hunters Lane and went for 29 yards.  Recorded tackles in 7 contests with his best being 2 stops versus Cane Ridge and Beech.  Broke up passes against McGavock and East Nashville, and his tackle for loss was made in the Siegel game.

2015-Was a productive player in all three phases of the game for the Freshman team.  Started all season on defense, offense, and Special Teams helping the team to a 5-2 record.  He was the starting strong safety in the defensive secondary while being a starting running back on offense.  Did a great job on both sides of the ball as well as being a starter on Special Teams.  He wore jersey #32 during his Freshman season.
